We also have the best local fishing news people in the northeast on this site also they would have confirmed this.

A 42lb cod caught in British waters is very rare fish indeed do you agree ?.

A local tackle shop is 5mins away from Newbiggin(,more than one shop)I'm sure they also would be pleased for the publicity as well, if this had happened there would be no doubters.
        or green eye monsters.
        or jealous fisherman.
and no arguments as to "it is 42lb or no it's not"
And no people using language as liar !!.
No I do not agree! He weighed it at home, it's his fish, why should he get it verified just to satisfy the likes of you? He said it was 42lbs, that's good enough for me.

Anyway, that's my last word on the subject, I shouldn't have got drawn into replying to you, a waste of time and effort.

A day out to remember. In the words of Henry Gillby, WHAT A STONKER
I remember Ken Robinsons 40lber, and that was a pig of a fish. Great accomplishment mate, just keep re-living the moment.

I'm really interested mate as to why you would post a message like this?

              What does it achieve?

If you honestly believe it's not 42lbs, why not pm the guy? Why publicly post this?

I'm afraid it just makes you look like a pedantic, jealous angler who can't cope with being out fished!

Oh and one last question............Were you there??
...because IMO I don't think its 42lb. It's my opinion which I clearly stated.

...and If anyone said any different they would be called jealous and burnt alive!

i'd rather read the report, see the photo & watch a video of a very large cod being caught, than wade through the doubting drivel you lot are spouting, bit sad really when a simple "well done" would have sufficed.....

If you read my first post it says great fish.

Personally, I'd rather be out catching fish rather than reading reports.

                    • I have just watched the video of this after a few people had told me to look at it.I had to view it on you-tube as it doesn't seem to be here any longer and seriously, haway its never 42lb.probably only half that and a lovely fish yes, especially from inshore rough ground but how anybody who fishes themselves can call anybody for "doubting" is crazy.

                      • Ive been drawn in to replying to this and have to agree that it looks doubtful that its the size stated but hey who knows, anythings possible. Historically most monster cod are wreck caught or certainly caught from deep water. A 42lb cod big in the middle of summer with no roe?? If that had been a spawning fish then your looking at a potential 50lb winter fish.

Ive seen countless 20-30lb fish from the good old days, whitby, balcary etc and struggle to see how it would make 42lb, the hand next to the mouth is the give away together with the foot next to the body of the fish. And the post of the Norwegian fish doesnt help!

I have to agree with some of the posts and say it should have been officially weighed. I would have had a press release, claim in to Sea Angler for fish of the month etc etc

It seems there are a number fishermans tales, some are true some are beyond belief and some just have to be taken with a pinch of salt. What this is I can only guess.

And yes this is a forum - definition to openly express ones opinion!!

Anyway whatever size it is one hell of a local fish! Hopefully a sign of good things to come for the winter!

                              • If you want another picture for comparison, look for (google) Ken Robinson's 40lb cod caught from balcary back in the 80s.
Imagine how many massive fish like this and bigger are taken by trawlers daily!
It's his call if he wanted to keep it.
I don't think many anglers would have put it back tbh.
                                Stay safe!
                                Enjoy your fishing!
