A brief report on a brief session. Looking out from work at hot sunshine we’ve had for the last few days was too much so I took the afternoon off before it changes back to usual March weather. Other people had the same idea and I was followed into the lock by this big beauty. The photo doesn’t give much indication of scale. She was several times the length of my boat and even the decks were higher than most of Wor Lass. That would be too high to lift a good fish onto!
A bank of fog to the south of the river made the decision to turn north an easy one. The first couple of wrecks were fishless; first drop third wreck brought an instant response with a 6lb coddling taking a mackerel baited muppet. Scotchies followed but no more cod.
Conditions just got better and better, by this time I was down to wearing just a pair of shorts and shades – in March; very nice, but not too good for the photo’s. Here’s a misty shot of the lighthouse showing how calm the sea was instead.
Even the drift ground to a halt and I started walking backwards and forwards across the boat to give the bait some horizontal movement
A wreck closer in produced a few more fish with coddling to 4lb before I had to head home to see the Boss and celebrate our wedding anniversary. A good afternoon out, with a handful of fish to about 6lb, most of them to mackerel bait and even the scotchies preferring it to ragworm.
