  • Catch report "Grace" 6/06/16

Met with Steve and Darren at Royal quays and picked up Mr G from Mill Dam at 6.45. We turned North from the peirs and after negotiating a safe passage around the Salmon nets we tried the ground off St Mary's.
The water was murky and weedy with visibility down to less than 18 inches so we headed further North off Blyth where the water was slightly cleaner but still too murky for lures such as shads and twintails. The ground off Newbiggin was our next port of call where Steve immediately landed a fresh run Cod of about 3lb. He returned the fish with some ceremonial bollocks about giving it to king Neptune which did us no good because we never touched another fish again on the Newbiggin ground. We decided to go where the water was clean so it was wrecking for the remainder of the day.
The few wrecks we tried did produce fish but it was still hard going and we ended the day with only 14 keepers in total. We did throw back several legal size Ling but we kept the Cod and Pollock which were mainly good clean fish.
On balance not a very productive day but not really surprising after the North Easterly stir up which has blighted our fishing for most of the season.
We need some Westerlies as soon as possible so I hope King Neptune remembers the fish we threw back for him and has a word with whatever God controls the wind.

          Hi Chris,
Off to Norway on Thursday, same as when you were with us, last flight out of Edinburgh to Oslo where we get our head down until our 9.20am flight to Alta and then on to Sandland Brygge. We've kicked the Best Western hotel into touch after that double booked crap when they refused to acknowledge our complaint or compensate us because we booked our room through an agent. Stopping at the Scandic Hotel this time so hope it works out ok and hey, when I get back you're welcome to have a run out on "Grace" and perhaps log some of my inshore marks for you're Friars Goose mate. Catch up soon

Cheers Tony. Hope you have a good one and the weather is kind to you! Plenty halibut getting caught by the reports.

You tell a good story Tony; it's a pity about the fishing.

I've not seen the inshore waters so mucky with algae, a few miles offshore is much clearer, but devoid of fish wherever I go.
