  • Wor Lass - A Hard Day out 20/8/11

As others have reported, it was a hard day today, unless you like mackerel or whiting.

We had a ridiculously early start, slipping out of the marina at 05:30 to see sunrise over the river and an increasingly choppy sea.

I wanted to get a head start over other boats to be first on the wrecks to test the theory that it is the early worm that gets the fish. As it turned out very few other boats were out until the sea settled in the afternoon.

We stopped at a wreck just out from the pier and soon had enough mackerel for bait. Our next wreck had the Arcadia liner heading towards it; it was a bit bigger than us so we went first to the Dirty wreck then further out. Result = one : nil to the fish and so it went on with only attacks of the jumbo whiting to break the duck. By this time the wind was cresting white horses on top of the waves which sent us inshore to a wreck where Steve pulled out a 9 ½ lb ling, the only decent fish of the day.

When the tide turned the drift hit two knots at times, the fish were in hiding and we called it a day.

Well done for trying Kev , bet that ling put up a scrap , seems like the fishing is starting to slow down a bit, but it's still been a great season overall

Change the sheets? I hardly had time to get into bed before I was back out of it. I don’t know how you lads manage to do the early starts every week.

I thought you said you were early kevin ... but I read on and it was as late as 5.30am kidding

must admit i got to marina about 6.30am and wondered wher "wor lass" was as I know your not the "ridiculous early" type fisher .......
honest it usually is better early this is just a slight lull that I think we'll put down to a combination of big tide, bige drift and dirty water following a windy spell ..... we need sun and quiet seas for a week or so and they'll all come back ..

ps great sunrise kev, I missed it this morning .........

Nice picture Kev , shame about the fishing , I hope Norman is right and it's just a lul , I looked back to what I was doing this time last year on the catch reports forum and I went through a couple of blank weeks then before having a bumper session again , so fingers crossed

Good try though Kev, I never bother starting that early, too tired the rest of the day. I know once your up and out there early, it's a beautiful place to be, but sometimes the tides will be wrong, and a more sensible time does me.
