A good forecast at last, so rang my mate Ken to meet at Cullercoats. Sea was flat calm with a bright sky, so looking good.Went straight east for a couple of miles and stopped for mackerel, champion, straight in to them. 10 mins was enough, we probably could have filled a box in no time, they were just below the surface.
Headed for the first wreck, using two fowing traces baited with lug and rag. Bingo, straight into fish, me hitting a 5lb+ cod and Ken into a pouting and a whiting.
Next drift, Ken got a double header of codling
Then I hooked into a cod of around 7lb
Soon , we started catching too many pouting, so went to the next wreck. we kept on catching a mixture of cod and pout.
After a while, a breeze got up making the drift awkward, so decided to try inshore at anchor near the yellow can.
Fish straight away, codling up to 3-4lb.
Soon, the wind dropped to nil again, so went to a very close in wreck sat in only 50ft of water, and picked up a few more codling, all a nice 3-4lb stamp of fish.
Eventually, ran out of bait, plus was getting very hungry, so called it a day and headed back to Cullercoats.
In all, we had 18 cod we kept, returned 10 that were lip hooked, lots of wrasse, pout, whiting, and mackerel, a very enjoyable day afloat.
