After a couple of week’s holiday followed by poor weather, we finally got out today. The storms and heavy rain have washed a lot of debris into the sea, we motored past a tree and other flotsam six miles out from Tynemouth and the water looked like tea.
That’s all the excuses in, now for the fishing..... it was poor.
We started close inshore with no luck then made the unusual move of turning south east, passing a lot of other boats on the inshore wrecks and steamed on to plot some new coord’s at about six miles. We only caught small scotchies and some undersized whiting. The plague of whiting were a problem, coming in two at a time from some wrecks but became scarcer further out. Hitting the 12mile wrecks we still hadn’t found the cod; becalmed, the drift was 0knots and the rain hammered down.
On the way back in, an old favourite wreck saved the day with a few coddling to about 5lb falling to lug and squid baited muppets. They had a preference for pink muppets, we would have tried them baited with mackerel if we could have found any. Still, it was great to be back out there.
