My brother in law asked about a trip out in Eleda a week or two ago , apart from the big tide and the lack of fish recently today looked like being a good day to take him so it was arranged that he and his 12 year old son would join me this morning.
From a guests point of view , it was an almost perfect day for them , neither had done a lot of boat fishing before and the sea was perfect for the run out to the wrecks we spotted a minkie whale and were joined by a couple of dolphins for a while. Just as I feared though , the fishing was hard , plenty mackerel and Joel , my nephew , had the time of his life hauling up a string of big coalies , but I really wanted to get them amongst the cod
We tried a few wrecks out to about 8 miles , they were loving it but I knew it could be so much better , with the sea so flat I decided to head further out and set course for a wreck about 12 or 13 miles out , I could see the water clarity was so much better here and dropped a pirk over the side down to 260ft , hooked into a cod and handed the rod to Joel , "you reel that in" I said to him , what seemed like an hour later a nice plump 5lb cod eventually surfaced and the look on his face was worth any aggro or missed fishing I suffered today.
His dad took a slightly bigger one on the same first drop and we went back over this wreck a few more times taking several more cod before the tackle monster at the bottom of the sea started taking payment for them in the way of pirks.
It's cost me a fortune in tackle today (they didn't have any ) I've had to put my fishing second to organising theirs , and I've probably got a knackered bilge pump which Joel switched on by accident and ran dry for god knows how long ,and to top it all off when I berthed the boat at the end of the day , my brother in law jumped ashore first and held the boat , I switched off the engine came out of the wheelhouse and saw her drifting away from the pontoon and him struggling to hold her , in my haste to get ashore and help him I slipped and put my shoulder out , I can barely type this it hurts so bad , don't you know that it .......... hurts so goooood (sorry sometimes words remind me of song lyrics )
Anyway , they went home with a bag full of cod , mackerel and coalies , so they will be doing the hunter gatherer returns thing whilst I suffer and possibly miss the next few days flat seas if my shoulder doesn't improve
I was really feeling a bit down and sorry for myself as I was just getting back to somewhere near normal from the last time I hurt myself , then I watched injured soldiers with arms and legs missing driving rally cars on top gear and realised again just how lucky I am .............arthritis , ha! , bring it on

The things we do for family. They probably think it was just a normal day that YOU have at sea, the knock, the mishaps, it's the price you sometimes have to pay for none anglers. Pleased you found fish for them and obviously they enjoyed themselves which makes it all worthwhile.........
Hope your back on the water again soon Ray, you never know, your brother in law may want to go too............:

It's a whole new ball game when I have crew , if they are experienced anglers that's fine , I just tell em when they can drop and when they have to retrieve and get on with my own fishing, but when they are inexperienced I end up doing all the organising , rig choosing , tying , untangling , fish unhooking/despatching, bait preparing , boat handling, dolphin spotting, snag freeing, fish identifying, dead mans fingers and anenome removing, tea making , child minding ,ar*e wiping and anything else they chuck at me when I've got them out there. Doesn't leave a lot of time for fishing , specially when they are using both my main rods and reels and I'm left fishing with the wrong gear for the situation.

No wonder I like fishing alone , do what I want when I want , where I want , come home if I want

I'd like a regular fishing mate like some have asked for on here , but they'd have to be reasonably experienced ,self sufficient and organised , house trained ,have all their own gear , be able to boil a kettle without setting the boat on fire, have a sense of humour compatible with mine , be willing to stay out as long as I want and preferably a 34d .

Hope the shoulder is better quickly Ray. It doesn't half take some patience to take novices out without biting! Especialy when they are rapidly depleting your tackle box eh!
