Managed to get a last minute booking on Warlord today for my Dad and me
This was to be my first proper boat trip this year and We drove up to Amble full of optimism following a sleepless night ( for me anyway )
Left the harbour at 8 and stopped to catch some mackerel not far out from piers and they were very obliging. We got about a dozen in as many minutes, half for bait the rest destined for my dads new fish smoker
We then headed out looking for cod and spent the next couple of hours trying to find some fish. The water was quite coloured and the skipper was forced to move further out in search of clearer water.
There was a large lazy swell today and I have to admit it got to me a bit. It certainly got my dad who felt the need to ' groundbait ' every now and then
Jeff worked hard to find us all some fish and his efforts started to pay off as odd cod started to come aboard. The fishing was very hard today, The fish weren't playing and the swell wasn't pleasant.
I ended up with 5 cod and one ling kept up to maybe 5lb and a few coalies and undersize codling returned to fatten up. I also had a whiting which was returned. mackerel were showing all day but I kept my hooks well baited to get past them
My first cod of the day was caught on a SHAD Norman will be proud Nothing was working up to that point Pirks, hokkais baited with macky mussel squid and rag so I stuck a 5 " blue mackerel coloured shad on and caught as soon as it hit the bottom
Unfortunately it snagged on next drop and I lost it Will def invest in some for next trip.
A few nice fish came aboard to the other guys on board. There was a nice cod of around 7lb. A pollock of around 5lb and a cracking ling of just over 10lb brought smiles and a pb for one angler.
Even though conditions weren't perfect I enjoyed my day on Warlord and would recommend the boat and crew for a good day out.
Thanks for finding us some fish
Jonny
