Had a try out in the little boat this morning, seemed like a weather window for a couple of hours. Was out last night for mackerel and we managed about a dozen cod around Foxton so thought I'd have a try myself. Was a bit windy and avoiding pots was difficult but ended up with 6 cod and a lovely 2lb plaice. Caught in when coming off the hard ground on to the mud, its given me ideas to target another species rarely fished for up here.Saved the mark on the gps and when I checked chart later there's a patch about the size two football pitches there - future target? I'll have read up on methods.
Had a nice hawaii five o surf into the harbour an hour after low water with the northerly swell picking up, but something new learnt for later use I hope.

Can't see getting halibut! but plaice and even a few nice size dabs would be something different.I can catch cod, ling, pollack etc it's nice to target something else and the boss indoors had the plaice last night and really enjoyed the taste - so I have my orders!

          Excellent plaice Colin.

You might get the odd turbot, they get caught off the beaches nearby.

Me and Graham tried off Warkworth beach but didn't get a sniff.

                Nice one Colin.
Don't suppose the plaice are within casting range ?

Remember, I can chuck a lead about 400 yards !!

That's a cracking Plaice that Colin, I will add it to the list with the 15lb cod and cat/wolf fish!
I am keeping an eye out for Sardines as we are headed up the East coast of South Africa, I saw it on one documentary about it being amazing how they shoal in the Aghulas current about this time of year, haven't seen any yet though!

it happens very close to the shore, when they come in all the rods are out after the predators, seen the beach at Cape Vidal lined with 4 X 4's

I've fished in the next country up the east coast there (mozambique) for barracuda great sport but they chew through the bike cable traces! Have a look at the South Africans shore gear - 18ft rods and alvey reels, but they can't half cast with them. It's still winter down there and the cape is always windy so hope your enjoying it!........col
