Just in and still swaying a bit , so I'll fill in the blanks tomorrow (no it wasn't a blank )
Well I wasn't going to miss that flat sea , so off I set at 2pm arriving at the marina to see boat after boat coming back in , not a good sign I thought ? Cast off regardless and left the piers to the flattes calmest seas I've seen this year , I decided as it was late in the day to miss the usual close in wrecks and head straight for more distant marks. My first choice of wreck had two ribs full of divers over it , so I gave that a wide berth and headed to one a mile away from it , flat calm seas , perfect drift , clean wreck and a couple of cod was a perfect start to my afternoon.
I wasn't satisfied with this though and as the sea was so flat I headed further out again , to a deep water wreck that had looked promising but was difficult to fish due to drift and swells the last time I visited it.
Conditions were perfect , the drift was easy the sea was flat the wreck was forgiving on the tackle and if I could get through the mackerel , which I was catching on the clips of the swivels never mind the hooks , I caught 5lb pollock , which were taking my pirk on the drop , if I could get through the pollock , the wreck was covered in cod which were also keen to take a pirk. On the odd occasion I got through all three layers of fish , I could feel the pirk bumping off the wreck , not many times though before another greedy fish swallowed it up!
A couple of times I thought I had found a biggun only to pull in another 5lb+ pollock
A bit of a south easterly breeze got up and I thought it was going to ruin my afternoon , but I perservered with the increasing drift speed and switched to shads with much the same results , mackerel , pollock or cod , I tried a 6" shad to see if the mackerel would leave it alone , but I actually caught more on this than I did on the four inch shads . I also caught the best fish of the day on it though , a (would you believe it ) 9.5lb cod , I'm losing count of how many 9llb + but under 10lb cod I've caught.
I didn't want to come back in , the wind had eased again , the sea was perfect but the sun was starting to get lower in the sky and looking towards Amble it looked like they were getting a right pasting with the weather as I basked in the sunshine, eventually though I had to call it a day and headed back to find the sun setting on a now calm and dry marina
Glorious evenings fishing , I arrived back home at 10.30 pm (it's a 15 minute drive from the marina) , well chilled with a contented smile on my face .
