Given the scarcity of reports today, I can only guess that everyone is waiting for the better weather tomorrow and the wrecks will be busy then.
In the meantime, here’s a catch report 1 mackeral.
Friday’s afternoon forecast didn’t look great with a calmer spell before the thunderstorms moved in. We aimed to get out and back before they started; mission achieved in that respect.
The sea that met us out of Tynemouth piers was very lumpy, we dropped a couple of lines with mackerel feathers, a few hundred yards off the piers, it wasn’t a day for going far. 15 minutes and only 1 mackeral later, we decided to have a quick drift over a small wreck. It certainly was quick, dark clouds were scudding in from the south and the sea picked up even more. Drifting at two knots whilst being knocked all over in deteriorating conditions hastened the end of the day.
As if to commiserate us, we turned the boat towards the piers and spotted a pair of dolphins finning towards us. The followed the boat’s bow wave for 30 seconds then were gone before a camera was ready. What a sight, it's not one I'll ever forget.
We’d only been out for 30 minutes and in that time the waves into the river had built to an interesting size, surging and surfing us on a short, steep roller-coaster chop. It was the right decision at the time but half an hour later the skies cleared and wind dropped with little more than a shower.
