Well as keen as mustard it was off me and Micky went at about half six to make our way to the chosen wrecks with the Natalie Kristen astern of us on the way out of the harbour.
Upon starting time it was down and straight into fish from the off. The idea had been to pile on flowing traces heavily baited with mackeral and squid to try and sort out the bigger specimens, it didn't work!
First cod in the boat on the first drift fell to myself and wasn't a bad fish.
The wreck was full of medium sized fish so with no monsters showing off we went! After the fifth wreck we had a team talk and with the weather being so good we deceided to head further off than we had been before, I think we were 19 miles off at one point!
The first two wrecks we fished were ok but we had trouble with our echo sounder, not sure if the depth of water meant out small sounder wasn't up to it, we changed the frequency and could pick the wreck up but only just.
I had changed tactics to pirks and muppets as the depth of water meant fishing with a big bait took too long to get down. On the second wreck I hooked into what I thought was a yarker, I must admit I was gutted when I saw the outline of two fish on coming up, luckily the bottom one on the pirk was just under 11lb!
With us being way off we tried a few more wrecks on the plotter before returning to some inshore(8 mile off) wrecks. The fish were there again but unfortuanately only 3-5lb'ers whenwe were still in search of a monster.
We did see three minkie whales which was great but they wouldn't take the pirks!
Over slack water on the inner wrecks my shad kept tangling, I don't know if this was just down to the lack of tide to keep them off the main line/braid or what but I suspect that was the reason.
During the late afternoon we picked away with small cod again, no where near the Tyne boy's sized cod anyway!!!!!!!
I was double booked with my mam's 60th birthday so couldn't stay at the presentation for long but a big well done to Norma for the Amble Angling Centre and all concerned organising the event. Always a great day in memory of a great bloke.
I finished in the top ten somewhere and got a new rod for my efforts!
Well done to Geoff and Duncan on the Warlord and Colin for your ling and pollack respectively.
Micky wasn't far away either with his ling of over 7lb if I remember correctly and he won a rod as well!
Numbers wise we couldn't complain, this season is definetly a belter!
Back out maybe on Wednesday if the weathers ok! Can't wait! Might go Tuesday as well! Why not!
