  • A trip for the wife

On Sunday, Mondays forecast looked hot and sunny with light winds, so I asked my wife if she fancied a morning session................ the answer was, ok, so up at 7-30am and launched into what appeared to be a nice calm sea. We were just going about a mile off to try for mackerel. It was on the run out we realised there was a decent swell from the southeast, with a remark of, it's not as flat as I thought it would be. Once i'd cut the engine and started fishing with a light rod and macky feathers on, the boat was rising and falling about 5-6ft. Any how, after a few minutes i was into a codling which must have followed my 40gm lure up from the bottom, but lost it on the surface, it looked a good 4lb. No macky here so, further north towards the yellow can. Pauline was first in with her feathers and straight away was into a codling which was about 3/1/2lb.
Next drop, she hooked into 4 mackerel, one of them must have been about 1/1/2lb. By now, the fog bank which was getting ever closer, blotted out the sun, then land disappeared. We had one last drop with pauline getting another 3 macky, but by now, the swell was turning her a bit green, so on with the plotter and followed my tracks back to Cullercoats. Our trip must have only lasted an hour, which is a shame as there were fish there to be caught. Next time i'll make sure it's a flat as a pond with light westerly's, don't want to put her off now, do I!. Only took the one pic.

Nice one Arthur , and nice one Pauline , is that the first time Pauline has been on the boat with you , Reason for asking is i had my missus, Susan, out with me yesterday for the first time, we went 200 yards off Roker pier, and guess what, she caught 7 mackerel as well , in 20 minutes.I came in quick as there was a canny southerly chop ,

I'm thinking are we getting soft Arthur.....or just lonely....

I'm just a sentimental old hector. She's been out before when we first got the boat, and she beat me then as well. Obviously, I let her and also for the Sunderland air show for the last 3 years Chris.

I was fishing Tynemouth pier on Sunday Rich, but the trip out with my wife only lasted an hour on Monday, so maybe you shouted before I was out or after we'd gone in.
Was it foggy a few miles out Rich, or was it just confined to the coast

My wife has been out in the boat with me a couple of times , I have a picture somewhere of her driving it , but I doubt she would ever pick a fishing rod up and she definitely wouldn't handle bait or fish , she loves being on a boat though , as long as it weighs in at 120,000 tons ,has fine dining and takes her round the caribbean
