  • Nice Cod today at sea

After numerous cancellations and a rather frustrating long period of sh.... weather, we dared to go fishing again.

The weather was so bad, that I pulled my boat out for overdue cleaning and maintenance and engine service, but I was lucky to have access to my friends boat (JimBob) and went out with Ash.
Ash was still impressed by his PB Ling of 19lb on this awesome day we had at the beginning of December...

Out we went at 10am and slalomed through the woods and trees and timbers of the river Wear...out to sea and it felt so good....we almost did not mind the rain, the wind, the swell...well...almost.

The fishing was good at anchor as expected after the big seas and we surely hoped for a big one and BANG

    the sea delivered

what a nice cod...we were guessing the weight as I had no scales on me...the weight was hard to guess as he was rather short, with a big belly and a huge head

Anyway...Ash took the cod home and texted me later that it was his new PB of
18lb and the stomach was full of fish....sizeable flatfish and sand eels.

The conditions were very difficult with erratic svivelling on the anchor with awkward currents and a breezy wind, but we managed something like 10 cod.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR

It was taken on a squid and frozen black lugworm combination.

Ash has used a self tied panel rig with a gliding wired lead.

We anchored in 15m water just on the south edge of Hendon Rock over a gulley/channel of 15m water.

The fish was caught in the middle of the flood tide. At this particular time, the uptiding conditions were good...the SW wind had dropped a bit and the boat lined up well with the tide. On both our rods we had nonstop bites and caught cod (regardless what bait was on). This good period only lasted an hour or so until the wind freshened again and the tide slackened
