Well its my own fault , desperate for my first boat session this year I took the last place available on the Mistress for a friday evening session. Whenever the chance of fishing presents itself all logic goes out the window and I become far too optomistic
It was a lovely warm evening spoilt slightly by a bit of a swell which had you holding the rails occasionly. I was fishing with jumbo black hokkai baited with mackerel and ragworm hoping to target cod or ling.
Nothing at all caught at the first 2 marks for anyone then I got the first fish at the third, a decent pouting which went back.
We then started to see mackerel coming in by the full string for the next couple of hours. Great for some, but not my cup of tea anymore. During the macky frenzy just about everyone was getting tangled up with each other as strings of mackerel swam in big circles trying to escape.
Every drop you could feel the mackerel having a go at my big baits but as soon as my bait hit the bottom nothing was happening. A guy next to me was bait fishing and he blanked.
The trip was a major success for the macky basher and Tony and assistant were as usual in the thick of things helping with snags and tangles. The skipper found the mackerel and as the night wore on I began to grasp this was probably his main intention and not finding me some cod
On a good note I never got snagged once and lost no tackle and although a bit depressed while driving home it was still better than sitting in the house but maybe not as good as the pub
This was my fourth evening trip in total on the Mistress for a total of a few pouting and one small cod and of course mackerel if you want them. Probably my last evening trip until logic fails again
