  • Slinky Kate - Saturday 28th May 2011

Well, the winds are still blowing ........

After watching all the weather forecasts closing ranks and forcasting doom and gloom to boaters once again it was no surprise to see all the cancellations of charter boats and boat comps this weekend ... and they were right to do so, however, being a private boat owner we used our trump card this morning. ie Up early (out of normal charter hours), go see the sea and make the decision on the spot cutting short the trip if need be at the drop of a hat..... all the things a charter skipper can't do.

So after a quick spin along the seafront first it was decided to at least get out the marina and into the wind and see how it goes ... (4.00am just on day break )
As an extra today we were riding as safety boat for bert and the lads with Shady who have spent the winter months on an engine re-build and were up for the test run this morning .... (at 4.00am as well just in case there were any fish around after the initial tests )
I can happily report that there was no need for the safety boat as Shady ran sweet as a nut see pics ... (got some video as well once I've processed it)

Back to the fishing then (between test runs ) ... first couple of fish arrived on a close in wreck at about 5.00am ish ... after which we decided to move a little more offshore .

Between boat tests we moved around quite a bit this morning hunting out the fish, and did catch , but not to the levels of recent trips.

It was almost deja vu (back in time) ... after a tremendous season last season today went back to what could be called "Normal", it turned out a good hard worked fishing trip with fish in the box ok and of a decent size but in numbers more akin to previous seasons not last season.
Of course the incessant wind did not help and it is becoming all too normal to look inshore and see holes in the sea with white horses filling then blowing toward you from the west .... (and it takes a big wind to cause a westerly white horse)

High point of the day was finally catching a cod on a SHAD just as I was wondering how to report total shad failure ......

A few ling showing on the wrecks at the moment, we had two decent fish the bigger to 9lb and I believe shady had similar sized.

Lots of scotchie around today, always in a predictable position just at the back of the drift over the wreck

Good sized and condition Cod although not in great numbers with only four good keepers to ourselves today.

No Mackerel in sight today, maybe the wind has deterred them ...

Just a few pics to hold interest while the west winds drop off and lets our seas becalm a little.

First early cod of the day to myself

And Tony following up just to prove he can

The sunrise was well hidden by clouds but it did try to get out a little later ...

The Smallest Fish I've ever caucht on a 4 inch shad ....

    Decent Ling now showing ......

Shady's Sea Trials ...... well done lads looks and sounds good ...

tried and tested in a good hard sea ....

I think we gonna need a bigger boat ... I mean box

all the best, thanks for reading

and cheers to Tony, crew of the day .....

Class Norman, hard day with that wind but good size fish makes it worth it.

Great to see Shady had no issues also, its always heart in mouth for the first trip out and ear open for every noise.

You out Monday if the forecasted rough sea of Sunday dies down in time?

Hi Rich, yes I do plan to be out Monday (taking a work friend out) however the forecasts are still all over the place at the moment. They must've looked out the window today and quickly changed the next two days ..... for the worse, although still a maybe.

Well done on the catch Norman , looks like the ling are starting to show up in numbers again, and the monster pouting. Orange muppets seemed to be working for you and Tony today. I was down the marina this morning and the wind was howling through the yacht masts, which means a no, no for me.

Did a bilge clean and a dodgy fuse connector insted.., fingers crossed for Monday...

Those nice mornings when you can look into the depths, and the rays of the sun go deep into clear water. the days when you watch the little jellyfish go by hoping for the drift to speed up. and the days when you are heading in with the gulls behind you... Glad you got up at 3. 30.am

Firstly got to say it feels like the season has started properly now that Shady is out there dashing about from wreck to wreck

Secondly I wish that bloody wind would bugger off

Thirdly I love those 0255 alarm calls - best time of day to fish etc tide, wind, weather, sunrise, poetry in the soul yada yada yada

Bonus trip in a sense, as neither of us really expected to get out - so a bag of fresh fillets is a welcome bonus

Cheers Norman - Until next week
                    Ooh a new vid!

                      As always, great report Norm.

Thanks again for the safety cover and the breakfasts.

Shame the wind hampered the trip bit it was still great to get the season underway.

                      Till next weekend....

                      Cheers!
                      Cheers, Keith.
