Bit of a delayed report here but never mind.....
Knew it was going to be windy on saturday but thought we'd persevere and see what we could do. So, headed out of the piers at 9.45am turned right and headed down to the skeers with a brisk North Westerly behind us. Once at the skeers with the engine off we appreciated how strong the wind actually was. The sea was very very choppy and the drift was fast. Started fishing along side the Warlord using daylights. bait and Hokki's but got nothing. Had a few drifts for about an hour but still nothing....
Decided to switch to an 'old faithful' (shad) and bang straight into a fish, but that was it nothing else at all for the next half hour. With the sea building all the time I decided to head north to the Northern Hill in the hope that something may be there and also to ensure we were closer to home should the sea get worse. Got to the Northern Hill and was greeted by Eleda who already had plenty of fish so it was looking promising!!
By now we had all switched to shads and the fishing took off as soon as we hit the bottom, cod to 6lb were on board within 10 minutes. We carried on for the rest of the day drifting over the area picking plenty of fish up (including a wrasse). The weather was like nothing I've experienced before at sea - we literally had wind, rain, sun, hail the lot, one minute it was completely still with straight 'up and down' fishing the next minute our lines were at a 45 degree angle to the water with the wind howling.
Anyway we decided to head in around 6pm with 25 keepers and the same amount put back to fight another day - good job we came in at that time - with the fishing being so good I had completely forgot about the cill!! got to the marina opening and was met with about 40cm of water - s**t!! I decided to motor up to it, switch the engine off and drift over it then put the engine back into the water as soon as I had enough depth....
Of course that didn't go to plan at all, as soon as the engine was off the wind took us straight for the pier, so in a mad panic the engine was dropped back in and started just in time to get us away from the pier - I was just waiting to hear an almighty crunch but luckily it never came and we got into the marina unscathed!
So to wrap this story up, we had it all yesterday weather wise (and a cill related heart attack!!) but we were rewarded with plenty of fish so it was well worth it.
No picks unfortunately this time as my phone died, until the next time...
Tight lines
Cheers
