  • "The wrecks are dead" "The season is over" REALLY?

    Well...NOT

I planned the usual Thursday morning trip and as we all know, the weather is all over the place thanks to our friend El Nino

It seems that Thursdays (my free morning!) throughout the year there is always a storm---my wife reminds me that Thursday is named after the God of Thunder (Thor) !!

Anyway...it seemed possible to go very early until the forecasted rain and usual storm kicked in.

Phoned some friends and only Ash was free and keen.

David(northeast) and Pete cancelled last minute and are still biting their backsides in regret

Because of the small tides and bad forecast, we wanted to do a wreck or two and than flee inshore and target codlings and flatties on the anchor.

Met a well-known Charter Skipper the evening before who said: "Dont waste your time Norbert, THE WRECKS ARE DEAD !!!"

Out first light (frustratingly at almost 8am this time of the year) and it was nice and calm and not rainy. Stopped at a nice 7.5 miles wreck. The drift was a lovely 0.3 knot.

First drift and a lovely 9lb cod surfaced for Ash:

Mmmmh; The wrecks are not dead by the look of things...

Next 2 drifts and some nice ling and cod came up...we were starving for ling all season and here they were...all nice, fat 6-9lb specimen:

Some photos taken and whilst I upload them and bragg on whatsapp my own rod almost pulls me overboard with an enormous bite...the result our biggest ever pollack...12lb

Surely that already was a very nice and highly unexpected result of a december fishing day..

....but hell NO...Ash dwarfed that fish by quite a margin.

Not much later and on exactly the same area of the same wreck, he has an obvious massive fish on and labours it up

Hard to take a photo of a live fish weighing just under 10kg

or shall we say 19 lb (His personal best and the biggest fish ever on my boat !!)

Altogether 28 (or so) sizable fish. Not bad for a morning fishing in December...

What also was quite pleasing was the average size of comfortably 6-9lb...we struggled all season to find bigger ones.

I guess the next set of storms have truely kicked in

Great morning for you with some fantastic fish. Fabulous haul for this time of year.

That hat is a shocker mind you, I'd be embarrassed to have that on my teapot, never mind my head!

Well done for grabbing the opportunity to get out during this extended spell of unsettled weather. Cracking report, great pictures and good to know the fish are still about.

What pleased me most were the average sizes....almost no small fish...

another interesting aspect was that almost every fish was caught on the same bait...luminous hokkais with squid strips

We caught 90% of fish at the same northern edge of the wreck in a very small cluster.

Maybe we were incredibly lucky to be at the right time at the right place with the right bait....
...we had nonstop action for four hours and double hookups most of the time!

Guess where I will be at the next break in the wind

That would be a great catch in August never mind this time of year.

                        Well done lads.
                        Cheers, Keith.
