Just Bert and me this morning, "Uncle Benny Chocca Dooby Carville" had other other plans and both Bert and myself had to be home early so a couple of hours afloat using up frozen bait from last week was planned.
We met up in darkness at 6am and set off for the piers half an hour later, first stop the usual pier end marks, we picked a couple of fish up but the drift was not good so we headed off towards Souter.
There's been a "Mass Debate" among the Shady crew about the use of Cart for boat fishing over recent weeks, I was always a believer (I like to see juices oozing out of a bait) and Jim was so convinced he invented a new rig, but Bert was undecided and he's usually right.
So, at Souter over a wreck, I topped up my washed out bait with a bit of cart and scored, was it the cart? or the remainder of the other bait, peeler, squid etc, who knows? I used it last week on a 4 mile wreck and failed.
Next drift with my bait topped up again with a fresh cart stick I hadn't hit the bottom and fish on again, but the verdict was still out. Bert had lost his rig but said he'd set the drift up for me while he got ready so I took the opportunity for an experiment, I baited a rig up with nothing but a cart stick and attached it to his line and asked him to try it. We both sent our gear down and I don't think mine had hit the bottom before I was running for the landing net, a nice cart caught cod for the new believer
We used up the few cart sticks and peeler we had left and headed back to the pier end wrecks for the last few drifts where the now on fire skipper bagged a few more.
Back on the moorings for a rainy 10.30am with 15 cod to about 8lb
I think we are now agreed, cart works from the boat, in the right place.
Cheers Bert, cracking morning.
