  • Growler 11th Sept, is that all folks???

A bleak miserable start to a day, the weather improved but the fishing didn't!
I was going to head up to the marina on my motorbike as the Gaffa needed the car but after sticking my head out of the front door and being met with a downpour a quick phonecall to Micky to divert and pick me up en route.
We got to the marina and it was tipping down still, headed off to the first wreck and bagged up with the mackeral for bait for the day.

That was the only plus point, we tried a grand total of seven wrecks for the end product of three ling, a whiting and a scotchie! Just to check the fishing really was that bad and we hadn't missed anything we tried the same wrecks on the way back and had nowt! The only prolific thing again being mackeral.
It started getting a bit snotty around dinner time and the main exitment was getting back in the marina.

The spring tide meant I was doing about 7 knots at tick over going over the sill! I had to go straight in, turn her short around then back into it and slip up towards our berth, good fun though!

All in all a bit gutting, I know the water had been stirred up through the week and it was a big tide but it just felt like the fish have gone! The water was clear well off with jellyfish still everywhere.

I think I will give it one more go this week after the tides have moderated and the water has fully cleared and if there is still not much, that's it for 2010! I can't complain too much though as it has been the best season ever from any of my own boats!

Never mind Graham, the good pictures make up for the Lack of fish, at least its good to know that it was a quiet day throughout so not any individuals fault ....

I Like the pictures, I remember that sight coming into the marina (I used to be berthed there 12 years or so ago with my previous boat) wondering exactly just how much clearance you had over the sill ... seen many a boat stuck there for a few hours.

you obviously gave it a good try Graham, but that seemed to be the same story for most fishing on Saturday. Hope it was just the big tides putting the fish off, otherwise the jamboree of big ling catches for September talked about for a while is looking iffy Like the pics though.

You have to watch that sill Graham , I came over it one day in crystal clear water and there was a breeze block sat on it half way across along with all kinds of other crap , it says half a metre of water over the cill on the marker , but go over that breeze block and you are down to 9"
Shame about the fishing , I might get out again or I might bring the boat home and maybe take it piking .... we'l see

The sill was completely dry when I first arrived back in the harbour Ray, I tied up to the steps up the harbour and gave the boat a good wash down as I waited for the tide. There wasn't a breeze block in the middle but I know the sill is made up of those intelocking bricks/blocks so it may have been one of those you saw? I found that out on Nefin when I got out to lift her in the water to get her over at low tide!
It is just another reason I wouldn't fancy a fixed shaft boat at Amble, at least with the outboard you can trim it up but with a fixed shaft you are praying every time you go over around low water, or maybe that would just be me! I know how impatient I get especially when going fishing never mind coming in!
I have got the shore gear ready and am busy tying rigs up for the next bit of sea. I am not going to say that's it for the boat season just yet though! Shady's double made me reconsider!
