  • A week in Hartlepool

Well Saturday saw the end of a week in Hartlepool and 3 days afloat. Day 1 was with Mark (Kayos) and Lynne (Codqueen) the report has been done by Mark so that’s that one taken care of!
The next day out was on the Tuesday where we set off (Lisa and Myself) at approximately 05.30 for a trip offshore, this was going to be more of a scouting mission as I had a few new wrecks to try. The tides were really slack for the first few hours and we pushed off to about 30 miles. We then started working our way back doing some more wrecks. Picking up the odd fish but nothing big to report. The sea conditions were very good so we just kept plugging away and ended up with about 12/14 good keeper fish. The biggest was about 8lb
The last day at sea would be the Thursday as the weather would be turning for the worse at the weekend. Today’s crew my brother in law and myself. Once out through the lock and out into the bay there was a big rolling swell the boat could still cruise at 17knots and as the wind had dropped we took the decision to push off and do some more wrecks. After 4 wrecks and only a slack hand full of fish to show for it I went to an old faithful. This is an area where there are two wrecks very close together. We had done a couple of drifts when we heard a boat approaching when he suddenly stopped on the other wreck close by. We could see clearly that they were drifting it and there must have been 8 rods on-board. I carefully drifted and I had my suspicions as if we hit fish would he follow us onto this wreck. This is something I have never done. If I went to any mark and there was a boat already there I would always leave it for the one who had got there first! Well my suspicions were right as when we drifted the hot spot we were both in. The moment our rods bent over you could see the other lads reeling in frantically. The other boat then moved onto our said drift!! For me I had one more drift but I was now going to be playing a waiting game for the other boat to get off the mark. So with another fish off this wreck I decided another move was on the cards. 12 miles further offshore and I had another banker to try. Well for the next two hours we took at least a fish if not 2 per drift of this one. The final tally was about 22 fish and we threw as many small ones back. The biggest fell to me and was about 12lb. The sea was lovely but we knew the wind would start and sure enough it started as the forecast had predicted. So with an 18 mile steam home the decision was taken to return to port at 1pm. All in all the best day of the week with a few fish for the freezer.
So the highlights of the week! Getting 3 days out. Mark and Lynne getting a few fish for their freezer. And my brother in law catching a few fish too.

Great report Sean! Very glad you got some good fish and shook off the stalker, by heading for the horizon!

Lynn and I were out today, but only Mackerel bashing off the pier - how things change!

Musical theatre Summer Schools start tomorrow for the pair of us - Oh joy!
