  • JFK - The 3 Amigos!

My penance for being spanked twice in a few short days is to write this catch report for Mark, who is fast becoming my nemesis

It all started last night when Mark's friend David arrived from Scotland and we met up at the Queen's Head, Cullercoates for a meal. Of course all the talk was fishing talk and would we or wouldn't we get out in the morning?

We should have known that Norman had called the forecast correctly and we arrived at the Quays the back of 7am and met NESA member John (Orangeshad) and had a nice chat. We sailed across to Mill Dam to pick up another member Chris Scott and his pal. It was great to catch up again and we had a good laugh on the way to the fishing mark.

On arrival the swell was minimal and we were straight into the fishing. David was quickly into a few decent Coalies, Mackerel and a pan size Cod, so we were delighted for him. Mark meanwhile, having retired his Slinky one hook wonder rig, sent down a 2 hook rig he had tied at the caravan the night before with his new favourite bait - Squid!

Unfortunately he was still on fire and proceeded to boat 4 keeper Cod in the blink of an eye. I was spitting chips!

Blooming heck it was only 9am and he was miles ahead!

Fortunately he lost the rig and during the changeover I managed to land a decent Cod. Only a momentary respite however and as soon as he had re-rigged he was into a Ling. I was told it is called a strap Ling - I called it toaty! He returned it and sent the bait to the bottom, but it went quiet for him.

In the interim David and I caught another keeper Cod each - the comeback was on................................. Nope, a false dawn, David and I didn't catch another keeper all day, apart from Mackerel!

By now the swell had heightened and Skipper Allan made the move and we ended up closer to shore, off Whitley Bay, at St. Mary's Lighthouse. When we got there the swell had died down again(maybe with the slack water?) and the sky lightened up.

Much to my chagrin Kayos was in again with 2 more keeper Cod and a good Ling! So annoyed!

Thank goodness that was his last fish of the day as his luck changed and all he did for the next hour or so was loose rigs! It just confirms to me that luck is so much to do with fishing - well it is with us amateurs! I think we need to buy some more leads from KeithB!

Of the other NESA members, John did well with about 8 good Cod and Chris even better with roughly 10 plus fish and the best of the day, a Cod of about 7lbs, that won him the sweep.

A few more photos that Mark took.

Me looking pensive(spot the 3m swell................... not!)

David and I desperately trying to rig up and beat the man!

Skipper Allan called a halt to the fishing about 230pm as the drift was getting too fast and the fish seemed to have gone off. He did an amazing job in difficult conditions to find us the fish and there must have been about 80 boated and kept today, so thank you so much Allan!

On the way home the filleting began

Chris and John hard at it.

Chris Scott, today's top dog, well done that man!

David and I feeling sorry for ourselves!

So quite unbelievably I am 2-1 down with only one trip left, so the best I can do is rescue a face saving draw on Sunday, how embarrassing!

I think a bit of sabotage may be required!

PS I must have had too many beers last night as I forgot about the amazing show the White Beaked Dolphins put on, absolutely fabby! The were so close to the boat and totally breached a few times at the bow, as we were moving to a new mark, they stayed for a while and kept me enthralled while the fishing was quiet.

PPS Mark took about 8 photos and got some lovely shots........................of the sea!!

Good report Lynn, but looks like the gloves will have to come off now. If you are inshore fishing on your next trip, a two hook flapper rig baited with whole cooked prawn, (Cheap effective bait) North Shields fish quay outlets, will see you charge past Mark, who will be struggling to catch using diesel soaked squid.
    P.B. Cod 30lb-11ozs Balcary.

We meant to buy them in Asda Canman, but hadn't time to go through the tunnel!

So where can you get them at the North Shields fish quay?

PS He cheated a bit because one of his Cod spat out 2 prawns which he used to good effect!

Go down Tanners bank, that's left, off the road from Tynemouth to North Shields, opposite the Northumberland arms pub, follow the road down till you see a shop with blue canopy, and you're there. £3. Will get you enough prawn to fish all day.

                        Jfk 2

Morning guys, firstly a pleasure in meeting you both, you are a genuine couple with a nice sense of humour.
Anyway enough of the frivolity, as David mentioned, it got a little cheeky later in the day to the point I had upped weight to 1lb but still found myself skipping along, but no matter we had managed to have a decent day, with the company and banter a bonus.
So now it all comes down to Sunday, is it to be a resounding victory for Mark or will Lynn pull out all the stops and rescue the trip with a draw??????
Odds favour Mark watching his first half performance yesterday, but everyday is different with fishing.
Anyway enjoy the rest of your holidays, travel safely home and hope to catch you again.
By the way, give it your best on Sunday Lynn
                        John S

I have hatched a cunning plan John. I am the driver, so I am going to get up really early on Sunday and leave him snoring his head off in the caravan as I wend my merry way to Hartlepool!!

PS Great to meet you too(hope Ofsted don't come calling!)
