  • Mistress evening session 27/07/2010

After reading all the excellent reports over the last few weeks I decided to try an evening session on the Mistress. Hoping for some mackerel and perhaps a few cod. We left the quays at around 5.45 and were fishing about 20 minutes later. Daylights tipped with squid got me a few small coalies to begin with ( returned safe from the gulls ) and then hit a very quiet patch. Guy next to me was pulling in mackerel so I copied him and flicked the feathers out a bit and was instantly caught 3 no more than 10 foot out and maybe 6 foot down. Moral 'never be too proud to copy'. After catching perhaps a dozen mackie I decided to try for cod. Switched to some orange Hokkai and again baited generously with squid and a heavier weight and sent it to the bottom. There were 12 fishing on the boat and the styles varied, some spinning, some feathering, some fishing bottom and some just chatting not really knowing what was going on. I thought I was into the fish of a lifetime when I felt a knock and a huge fighting weight was fought to the surface only to find that I had hooked a couple of people on the other side of the boat who both had mackerel on and were too busy chatting to know anything about it. I passed them their fish and cut my braid as I reckoned I was loosing too much time untangling. Many tangles ensued and took the shine of the trip. Tony was very helpful sorting out tangles and certainly found the fish. One or two decent cod were caught probably up to 6-7lb but mostly anything dropped in was immediately attacked by mackerel. We got back to quays around 9.00.

Despite the congestion I did enjoy getting out and would love to arrange a full day sometime very soon, got lots of holidays to take. Now seems to be a great time if you fancy a few hours out to get a few mackerel.

Sorry no pics too busy with braid tangles
