After last weekends "Manic" Fish fest it was clear from the start this morning not to try and even compare it let alone compete with it hence the theme of today was .... chill ....... and relax ..

well relax is not quite the word I suppose when your lying waiting for the alarm to explode at 2.15am .....

Up and out as ever with a 3.30am pick up for Tony (hope your enjoying australia Steve) ... first fish timed at 3.52am a mackerel to Tone.

there was a secret mission today to attempt trolling (thanks for all the info col) not that we expect to catch much but since theres a step change in the gear used and the tactics then todays effort would be based around checking out the set-up and method with a view to a hunt in the relevant spots in a few weeks time.
After much discussion and decision as to how to rig the equipment it was wheel off tiller on and a slow troll to see if the "paravanes" swam ......
ace ! they seemed to take over as soon as they hit the water and glided straight and true with gummies marching behind them ....
unfortunately we didn't on this occasion get anything (although I`m sure I did have a mackerel at one point but it escaped) but that was for another day, today the method was proven ......... and, as can be seen by tonys "at the tiller" picture there may be some other advantages to this tiller steering and fishing on the troll ....

other than that, we made our way around the usual wrecks (in a chill kind of fasion ) we noted that mackerel were in FULL supply making it often difficult to get to the bottom, and of course the usual supply of many many bait robbing scotchies and whiting ....

Ling seemed to be the order of the day although we had not targeted them specifically (other than Tonys usual large bait on flowing trace) with a haul of I seem to remember 6 or 7 to 8lbd and only the one keeper cod.

Highlight of the Day for tony was a nice wrasse at St Marys which looks even more colorful on video when I put something together.

observations of the day ... The color of the water was exceptionally poor , no doubt the aftermath of the weeks rain ....
and ... jelly fish ... still in great numbers all around the tyne, and becomes quite distateful when reeling in and they get in the way ...

conclusions of the day , well ,we went, we enjoyed and we caught a decent bag of fish each to take home ..... but ... we were already of the understanding that the previous week was a one in a million so didn't expect too much, on that note I think we had the most restful days fishing we've had in a while ....... non competetive and "chilled"

    pics of the day

    sunririse 4.15 ish

Not quite the stamp we're used to

A nice Wrass for Tone ....

    Serious hard working "Trolling"

Another Saturday and another great fishing experience, cheers Tone

    Thanks all for reading

Nice to hear the trolling set up works, when you see the way the gummi's swim behind the vane it's easy to see they're attractive to pollack. Dirty water wouldn't help, but a couple of calm days should see that off - wait till that first take nearly pulls the rod out the holder ! hope you set the drag !
        Nice report Col

Yes I was well pleased with that Wrasse - never had one on the boat until today and it had lovely colouration...hell of a take too - very Cod-like.

Totally different mindset today after last week - no pressure to succeed (or indeed fill the freezer) so t'was just a cruise around the wrecks and hard ground picking up fish here and there...larvely

That said I'm still bushed...until next time - cheers Norman

                          Evening Norman,

The trolling will be another method to rely on once you get it sorted. Colin showed me and Micky how to do it and the first take is something else with the rod slamming off the gunnels and hooping over. It takes a while to get confidence in the method (I still haven't managed confidence in shad fishing yet!) but once you do, as long as the sea is clear, it is a certainty that you will catch pollock on the right marks, luckily we didn't have to experiment much there as Colin showed us the marks!
Four more weekends of fishing exile to go! Should be back in time for the huge ling at the back end! And then the start of the shore season!

                          Graham.
