Team Slinky and Guest today…that guest being Keith “WolfMan” Brown – but more of that later on eh?
Not so casual meet up of 0330 at RQ see’s us beyond the piers about 20 mins later…we even beat our lady Dawn who was scheduled to make an appearance at 0436 (so said Google)
The trip was never in question this week. XC Weather said the wind would drop and the sea would be flat – that was good enough for us…all we had to do was turn up!
Skipper sets a “target” each trip…usually a fairly low and tongue in cheek value to ensure we break any hoodoo and have fish supper that week…well, Keith had the first half of that quota inside a half hour! (and Dawn still hadn’t appeared LOL) This was in no small part to the prime crab baits he was sending over the side! That said however we were all into fish from the off today and it was at 0630 when we had to “split the boxes” as the first one was brimful of Cod-shaped asha! Brilliant Stuff!
Today was all about consistency…at no point did we hit a “manic” spot but at every wreck we hit we managed fish…and I’m not going to lie as a result this sometimes meant losing fish too! A lot of fish managed to bump off the hooks on the way up today and yours truly did also lose a nice one at the top! (we got the net out after that LOL)
And so it was that we wended our way around the map of wrecks that dot our coast line in search of fish…
Around about mid morning we started to make our way back and we found ourselves stopping off at an earlier drop off…*woopya* Keith was in again…we didn’t think anything of it until it broke the surface – WOLF FISH!
And it was ANGRY!
Once on board it managed to un-hook itself and so started to thrash about the deck which was a bit unnerving to say the least LOL
Anyway as this one was bigger than the one returned last week and because we wanted to try out the eating qualities it was summarily despatched and placed in its own bucket for fear of losing some of the other catch
I have perhaps made that seem easier than it sounded…it wasn’t LOL Without going into too much detail it did take a little bit of coaxing to give up the ghost
So with that drama over and all three of us still chuckling it was “round again”
Well blow me if Keith “WolfMan” Brown doesn’t pick up another one!
LOL would you Adam and Eve it! What a phenomenal day!
It wasn’t long after that we called it a quits…it was (is) after all the Skippers Birthday today so he wanted to get home in readiness for the family night out that was planned…there was also the not so small matter of feeding the seagulls to attend to!
Back at the marina it was all hands to filleting stations with both crew and Skipper getting stuck in. As they say many hands make light work and we soon had it nailed down.
Great day and great company and a Big Happy Birthday to Norman who is not only the “Skipper” but a good friend…today was a good ‘un and I know Norman enjoyed it thoroughly
Few pics from today:
First of the day before the sun had even risen
A pre dawn Codlet that went straight back after photo-call
Finally she arrives!!!
Fish kept coming
Wolf Fish!!!
Team effort!!!
To reiterate – today was a brilliant day and I am thoroughly knackered still but I care not!
Cheers Norman for another great day on Slinky Kate
Thanks for reading
