Out this morning with Tony (Steve - its time to change your employment , it's getting in the way of your fishing )
Met at marina at 4.00am (a modest starting time ) with a bit blow from the south as forcast but since its been South to SW for a few days we were not too worried about sea state.
Nice run up to piers wth river flooding calmly and a high tide due at 8.15am ... surprisingly quiet !, as we had anticipated a few others on an early call with all the good reports recently.
First port of call was a close in spot that has been ... well .... "ballistic" ..... for a few weeks, but unfortunately nothing but mackerel, and scothies today (maybe later when the tide gets to a more preferrable position)
As ever the sun rose with breathtaking views, whatever cloud there was soon burnt off to leave a clear sky and flat sea ......... wow o wow
We`ve spent the beginning of the season on close in rough ground (as I expect most have done the same) but today we decided to do the circuit, the wreck circuit, the idea was to target bigger fish and if the baits tony was preparing were anything to go by we were gonna be into some biggies (see his post on his latest lures whoa, need more deck space for some of them)
Off we went to 5 mile marks and fish were a plenty, cod , ling, scotchie, mackerel, coalie, and whiting. It seemed that every wreck held fish and they were all a step bigger than the ground fish we've had recently, although not quite as prevalent ......
between 4.00am and 7.00am fish came aboard, all biggies (whoo hoo) we had several 7lbd , 8lbd and a best of 9lbd but as the tide hit top at 8.30 ish it went quiet ....
the wind dropped the current dropped and the sun shone (it was hard to stay awake ).
Over the VHF were talks of hard times and few fish (am I glad we came out early )
we spent the next hour with nothing but whiting and scotchies till the "special wind" as Tony called it came up with the flow of the tide at about 10.00am and suddenly it was cod ling cod once again ....
decided to call it a day at about 11.00am with a box or two of fish , a happy heart and a very tired body (them 9lbdrs sure wear you out ... )
All in all a great days fishing with the average fish being about 7lbd ........ not a bad stamp by any accounts ...
roll on next week
pictures of the day ..........
sunrise........ just cos we were there ....
tonys first ling ......
and his second ......
My 9lbd cod
and just to show tony catches cod as well .....
oh and one last one ............ do you think I`m working the cabin boy too hard ????
thanks all for reading ....
cheers
