  • Growler 16th June, Super Smashing Great!

    Well after six weeks at work a quick nip out was planned today to put our five pots in coupled with maybe a bit of fishing. Darren was deputising for Micky today as he was at work! unlucky! After getting to the marina there was still a little swell at the harbour entrance. Once motoring down it wasn't too bad with no breakers as it was still about half tide.

    After shooting the pots it was time to stick her nose out and see what it was like outside of the shelter of Coquet Island. There was a gentle 1m northerly swell so off a wrecking it was due to the water colour inshore.
    First wreck and before I could get my gear down Darren was into a fish, we took a few cod and ling before moving on.

    The next wreck was lying the wrong way for the drift which was bloody quick and we only got one fish of her. Next up with the weather being good we deceided on trying three new ones. The first two were crap but the third was stuffed! The best day fishing I have ever had on any of my own boats. Darren got his first doubler cod and the first one we have had on Growler. here he is bringing her up;

    And posing afterwards!

    I thought I had him beat on our last drop but it was a ling and a cod! Both good sized though so I shouldnt grumble!

    Squid and mackeral were used as bait but the lures took a lot of fish as well.
    A quick unexpected session which was great! Hope the weather stays ok for friday! Ray we are now neighbours! They have moved us next to you whilst our pontoon is repaired.

        Well done Graham , great catch by the sound of it and well done to Darren on his first double.
        Nice to see happy smiling faces and fish coming in, general view seems to be very good for this season so far, long may it last, how longs your leave?

              I will have to photoshop those numbers on the plotters eh Colin! I have lost your number mate could you drop me a text.
              I have got 5 weeks and two days left off on leave left Norman. I agree with you, so far the fishing has been fantastic, the pollock and mackeral haven't made their way up to Amble as of yet but the cod and ling have. I thought with the size of tide and the southerly breeze when it picked up we wouldn't be onto much, how wrong I was. The drift was up to two knots at times but I am learning this drift mullarkey and trying to stop the correct distance downtide of the wreck so your line is as up and down as possible in the critical zone. I know it's not easy but I have seen a definite improvement, today at least anyway!

              Graham.

                  Great stuff Graham , I've just come in from Amble , had a couple of hours out with nothing much to show for my efforts , the sea was a bit lumpy and it was taking too long to get anywhere for the time I had.
                  I noticed Growler next to me , I didn't crash into her when I was parking up ...... honest
                  I caught a new species tonight ....... a weaver , fortunately I knew what it was and didn't get hold of it , first time I've seen a live one , had a cod cough one up in the boat half digested once , hard to believe such a cute little thing could have such a nasty sting.
