Finally got out for a full day today on the Mistress and the conditions reminded me more of the Med than the North sea.

A couple of pics on the way out ( iphone camera sorry )

We hoped to pick up some mackerel for bait but they were very scarce today, we only managed 3 all day and apart from some ragworm and a few prawns this left me a bit short of fresh bait.

Swapping my feathers for some jumbo orange hokkais we fished a number of wrecks in the tynemouth area. Lots of pouting showing up and some of them quite a good size but all returned. Then I was suprised by a much heavier strike and I was delighted to land my first ever Ling of about 3lb. As we moved up the coast eventually fishing opposite Alcan we started picking up a number of cod 3-4lb and as usual loads of pouting and quite a few very handsome young cod of maybe half a pound.

Water seemed very dirty up around Blyth area and the fishing seemed to me to be poorer here than back down the coast but odd fish were still turning up. By this time probably about 2.00pm my bait was finished and I brought out the big guns, a big shiny chrome pirk which has sat in my tackle bag for years. First drop over the next wreck got me 2 coalies one on the pirk and other on daylights. Returned these then got snagged, got free then caught up on another anglers line and reckoned trebles are just too much bother.

Anyway I had a great day out with my Dad who caught a ling of 5lb and was really chuffed, Tony was a great host and was there like a shot if you got snagged. Lost count of the number of fish I caught, the following pic shows what I kept.

Only lost 1 weight and a couple of snapped/straightened hooks all day so not too costly a day either. My one regret is not putting sunscreen on my arms. I covered my face and neck but assumed my arms were ok. They are on fire and I can feel the skin tightening as I type.

Thanks for reading and thanks for help and support over the last few days.

Nice one on the fish Jonny looks like it was a lush day - you won't forget the suncream next time I bet

I slather mine on before my hands get skanky with bait scuzz - and that often means before the sun has even got up
      Ooh a new vid!

I must admit the last time I caught cod on a boat ( years ago ) they just seemed like a dead weight. Todays fish did fight quite well and the ling more so. The cod were full of small crab.

I am off for a bath now but keepin my arms out of the water

Next trip is when I can find space on a boat and my sunburn eases

If I had the opportunity I would fish every day, I think if I get the chance to retire some day a boat will be high on the agenda of purchases. Got 2 kids one of which the eldest is about to go to university so our money is well tied up at the moment otherwise my wife would become a virtual fishermans widow.

Anyway I am off to look for aftersun cream. hope you do well if you are out this weekend.

                    Cheers

                      Great stuff Jonny!

It's addictive isn't it, my workmate had to put with me "air pirking" today He was saying he wished he could be so passionate about a hobby, he got the standard reply "Aye if I'm not fishing I'm playing with me tackle"

Looking forward to your next report.
                      Cheers, Keith.

I am only allowed to play with my tackle in the garage, apparently it is dangerous and smelly according to the wife
