We fished a competition yesterday and decided to try and catch one big fish rather than lots of small ones. We fished a colossal wreck called 'the namorado field jacket' which is 32 miles from Hartlepool.
This thing is huge at 550ft x 600ft x 80ft high, but divers have told me it is surrounded by nets and very frustrating to fish. Dave Bruce hooked and lost a fish of over 20lb which swam into the nets even though it was 50ft from the bottom. It is an awful feeling when it happens because you can feel the big fish struggling behind the nets before the mono snaps.
We have taken big pollock from it in the past approaching 20lb by 'skimming' the top using line counters.
My mate Ivan Bell from Glossop angling club managed to get a nice ling away which won us the competition. It was caught early in the day but weighed 19 1/2lb at 6pm last night, so I reckon it was about 22lb when caught.
