Awesome ..............
thats it, report more or less over cant think of a better word for it today.
After a few weeks of missing out due to wind or sea conditions (or just being big softies ) we had been watching with fingers crossed to get the chance to get out this weekend. XC weather had it forcasted (once again) spot on, luckily spot on in our favour. The charts showed a becalm that started early saturday morning and that lasted till into the afternoon, this along with a previous week of westerlies meant one thing "flat seas" ,,, whooo hoooo.
To add to our pain of bad weather weekends we have been forced to read report after report (midweek in the main) of good catches ( cheers stephen lol), so with no more afoot it was out early with a meet-up at 4.00am in marina carpark.
Now 4.00am is early and to be honest we are becoming used to it but by we made the lock and got fueled up it was almost 4.30am and a text arrived saying "where are you the fishing is mad out here" (or words to that effect .......) soooo we not the only mad ones in the pack
This quickly gave us a boost of adrenaline and we casually at the correct river speed made our way out of the piers for the usual breakfast (stella) meet up.
With the question "ok then wheres all the fish?" barely off my lips Tony was in for the first of the day (our first that is as the late starters), not big but a clean fighting 2-3 lbs.
And so it was for the next 30mins or so with us both picking up several codling all in the 2-3 lb range ...... whilst watch every other boat around doing the same ...... it was a codlingfest !
Time comes when 2-3 lbs is just not big enough so we decided to move on out further out to the 3 mile mark.
Just like a scaling factor the 1 to 2.5 mile increased the general size from 2lb to 5lb (well almost like that lol).
Generally we find the cleaner harder fighting fish are the smaller 3lb ders found inshore April thru June but not today the 4-5lbders on the wrecks were all hard fighting, clean and very plump in stature.
Again on the first wrecks it was another codlingfest ! not quite as much action as inshore but a better stamp.
We also started hitting different species with a few coley for Tone and a nice Pollack for myself. (No mackerel today)
We'd set our Target today as 7 fish, (ensuring Tony and I had at least one fillet per day for the next seven days) ..... we were already past that by far and didn't know what was about to happen next .............
Off we went a little further with a couple of other boats to a slightly deeper wreck ...................
seconds after the weights hit the bottom we were both into fish and an even better stamp.....
If the previous two spots had been a codlingfest, then this was a CODfest!
Superb fishing with take after take not quite hitting the magical 10lb but a nice 9.5lb for Tony.
The tide was flowing nicely which made for a good drift speed and with several boats now on the same wreck it was a line up with each and everyone taking their turn, the wreck was on of fire (in fishing terms anyway ) we all bagged up.
Then .......... it stopped ....... (almost relieved as my back was going )
We moved off, other boats moved off, all in different directions ..... we were all spent !
We tried a couple more spots but with little comparative success, so we decided not to be greedy and to leave the sea in peace, it had given us all a good day and was surely storing up again for the next time.
We caught a few, were content, tired and happy so headed back in after what can only be remembered as an AWESOME day.
Many thanks to all we met out there today ....
