I made up for a weekend ashore by taking the afternoon off to go fishing today. Two of us aboard "Wor Lass" headed out of the Royal Quays at lunchtime and started by trying to find some of the wrecks I’ve just added to the chart plotter.
They were there in the list of coordinates but not many of them were showing up on the fish finder. We started using a grid pattern to check we hadn’t missed and occasionally found a lump or two to leave leads on and mark in the plotter for later in the season when they start to get populated. None of the wrecks we found up to about 4 miles offshore had many fish on them and by mid afternoon it looked like a couple of scotchies were going to save us from a blank day.
Last year we had most luck fishing close in at the start of the season, so we headed in to fish in about 50ft of water and that’s when the fishing picked up. A steady stream of small codling to about 3lb came in to rag baited lures. There are a few fish out there but we had to look hard for them.
