  • Wrecks Hunt

I made up for a weekend ashore by taking the afternoon off to go fishing today. Two of us aboard "Wor Lass" headed out of the Royal Quays at lunchtime and started by trying to find some of the wrecks I’ve just added to the chart plotter.
They were there in the list of coordinates but not many of them were showing up on the fish finder. We started using a grid pattern to check we hadn’t missed and occasionally found a lump or two to leave leads on and mark in the plotter for later in the season when they start to get populated. None of the wrecks we found up to about 4 miles offshore had many fish on them and by mid afternoon it looked like a couple of scotchies were going to save us from a blank day.
Last year we had most luck fishing close in at the start of the season, so we headed in to fish in about 50ft of water and that’s when the fishing picked up. A steady stream of small codling to about 3lb came in to rag baited lures. There are a few fish out there but we had to look hard for them.

Nice report Kevin, yes the wrecks are a bit quiet at the moment but I`m sure it'll pick up later. Think a "follow me and mark it" session is in order shortly as the wrecks are not as per the "books" as it were.......

Good to see you hit the inshore fish in the end, to be fair these are the best pan fish around, nice and clean ...... and perfect pan sized

I think it is one of the most fun parts of wreck fishing, finding a area and fishing something new.

I always make a point of trying a new wreck or mark at least every day until i run out of new ones. As you say alot not there are not worth fishing but every so often you come by a nice little lump and it fishes it's balls off (Can you remember el_sid

Good report Kev1n. Know what you mean, last year I remember looking for a wreck, but gave up in the end, only to find it over 1/4 mile away from its coordinates. At least you found some fish, goodonya.
