  • Slinky Kate Sunday 25th April 2010

Out today Sunday, not the usual Saturday as spent the day at St James park ...

Tony The Great Wallsendo crewing for me ... cheers mate ....

Well we thought we had it sorted, out at 6.00am (a little late but low tide at 7.45am kept us back)

Got to say the forcast was pretty spot on, it was said to be misty (it was), cold (it was) raining at times (it did) ....
This in our eyes was the main start of the season after being released from the royal Quays lock (eventually) what with a reasonable days weather and a med tide right in (we thought) the middle of the spring run ....

Fishing certainly is an eye opener, if we'd been the least bit pessimistic we would have been back by 10.00am.

It was rather cold, dreary and wet, with NO FISH (at first), tried a few favourite spots and even a few close in wrecks but by 10.00am (4 hrs into the trip) we had but 2 codling of 2-3 lbd.

decide then to steam up to newbiggin hoping to find better fishing following Ivans posts ......... It Rained ... constantly, and gave us nothing but scotchies (pouting) mind you they were in the larger size at around 1lb plus.

Gave up on that and headed back to St Marys with a thought of maybe this is not quite our day ..... I believe at this point weaker men would have gone home (or is that more sensible men ?) but we didnt and eventually the fish started to bite, with take after take beginning to brighten our day ......
we did return a lot and have video to show later but ended up keeping 9 good clean spring run fish between us.
There were many border line size fish taken but all were returned , along with many pouting.
So, eventually it turned out to be a real good day with the family guaranteed Cod and Chips for mondays tea ... however as mentioned earlier, it would have been so easy at a number of points to call it a day and return almost empty handed.
I think the moral is, this fishing aint easy, aint a given and requires patients and perseverence ...... with all that in front of you you just do stand a chance ........

few pics of the day ......

sunrise beat us as it was way up there in the sky before we even left the marina ...

first codling of the day to Tony...... (see how warm the scene looks )

My first of the day :- .....

then eventually they started coming in 2 X 2 .....

and the end result .......... cod fillets all round ..

Great days fishing, but just goes to show its not easy, you have to stick at it to get results.

Once again many thanks to crewman of the Day Tony ....

    cheers

    Norm

Excellent report Norman, always look forward to them. You certainly do some miles for the scaly little devils, but your right, if they're not biting straight away, don't give up, just move around. Nice bucket of uniform fillets. Great pic too.

after seemingly weeks and weeks of inactivity my body is aching all over from its day out of the house and off its comfy nook in the sofa

So very very very glad we got into the fish (finally) I was starting to think they no longer existed - which of course they do

            Cheers as ever Norman
            Ooh a new vid!

Nice catch report Norman, totally agree with trying to find the fish instead of sitting in the same spot. Do you know who is selling the Ocqueteau 624 on ebay, its in the RQ i think, looks a cracking boat.

Great read as always Norman! Pleased you both got into the fish your not wrong on the persivering I dont know which I prefer fish early or late all the same its nice to be rewarded makes you happy when connecting.
Its funny how they can just come on all of a sudden/state of tide etc.

Cheers for comments lads, its good to see the season kicking off .....

Chris, looked on ebay and from the second last picture and where it is berthed yes I think I know which boat it is (its about 10 or so berths before Slinky Kate on same pontoon) but sorry I dont know the owner.

dont have any comment other than I`ve been happy with Ocqueteau from day 1 and that was over 10 years ago ....... the full range seem to be similar in fit out quality so I`m sure it's a good un.

                            cheers
