  • Slinky Kate 2010 is here - (March 13th)

well ........... sometimes you sit there and think "how am I going to report this ? ..... " so, it's a one of those so here we go.

Today was one of those days that are made for private boaters, in that you dont need to make the decision until the last possible minute (or 15 mins as the case may be). If I had to call it yesterday it would be a no show but after a trip down to the coast and an eyeball at the sea early this morning that changed everything and it was a quick call to Tone with a thumbs up (work commitments done it in for Steve unfortunately)
Out late by our standards at 8.45am due to the low tide being at 8.30am.
Full of anticipation full of hope and both bearing the new Ugly Stik 20lbd rods we set off in the cold ....
Out of the piers just after low tide and straight to a favourite mark ....
hmmmmm nothing doing but a fierce north westerly wind that ripped the tackle from the end of your line.
Well it is early in the year and it is just after low so off we went inshore again to the customary St Marys..........

My goodness it was cold and the heaving north westerly wind and the large swell made life a little uncomfortable ....... (but there was some sun)

An early take and the christening of my new rod and reel brought smiles to our faces with the thought maybe just maybe this aint so bad, however it was only a little pouting but at least we "caught it for steve".

Unfortunately things did not improve much from there ........ we tried several "favourite" spots around the area, fished lures, bait etc etc but all to no avail.

Off then to the wrecks ...........
(I think we did most of them ) but still to no avail, luckily by about 1.30 I began to feel the ends of my fingers again through the cold so it were not all bad.

Left with the choice at 2.00 we though either go back (almost blank) or one last trip to St Marys ? ........

we opted for the one last trip and thank good ness (to save our blushes) we did .... just at the point of giving up Tonys face lit up as he too christened his new rod with a nice codling of about 2.5lbd

gave it another 30mins but then decided this must have been a cod on holiday living alone ...

end result one nice codling for the trip, (thanks for the donation Tone it tasted just fine ), lots of laos tackle and the understanding that "it's not always easy"

at least we did complete the mission ....... which was to checkout all the systems and ensure Slinky Kate was up for another season ................ and she sure is ....

just a couple of pics of the day

Just for Steve (we can catch them as well)

The fish of the day .. well done Tony

A Nice pic of the cheviots behind St Marys (whilst fish were NOT biting)

And Finally ..... how I like my Codling ..........

well it is still early in the season so musnt grumble, it was good to get back out there ......... great day once again many thanks to Tony the Cabin Boy.

    cheers

    Great report as ever Norm.

I'm sure things will pick up once the crustys start shedding their shells.
    Cheers, Keith.

Well done lads on getting out sounds like it was'nt ideal conditions but you battled with the elements and soldiered on regardless.
Norman you cook up a canny spread on Slinky, Richy take note.
Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught

Sid , that was captains portions only, the cabin boy had to put up with salted beef and stale bread (even though he caught the bounty)

No weavels in the bread I hope ( Poor Tony ) . A hard days fishing is better than a good day at work Norman , glad you got out and the grub looks great .
You can take the lad out of Walker but .......

cheers steve, aye a good day out and the main thing is Slinky Kates performance was 100% so its all go for the season ......

did have an interesting return by the way when the lock gate broke down as we waited to enter ......

imagine how difficult it was for a whole hour....... drifting in the river, after a days fishing, beer in hand, sun on face, newcastle match on radio, no chance of doing anything else ............ goodness I almost fell asleep

Still sounds a good day even if the fish not there, better than pottering around the house or garden.

1ST codling of the season anyway and loads more to follow am sure

Well done on getting out. I am envious of you's and can't wait to get home and off fishing. Was there much colour in the water?
It's these early season days where it is borderline to go or not to go but you are that keen you think sod it and go anyway! Half way through the season and it would be an abandoned one!

                              Nice Norman

I we passed the big beast, it was picking up from in between the two piers all the out for about 400 yards..load sof the pier and some casting towards it?????

Seemed about the same sea state as today..few boats out as well.

Sure we will see a few more videos with some doubles in as the season goes on
