  • jigging vs uptideing

can someone please tell me why people uptide instead of jigging in winter months was just curious

Jigging and fishing lures works well in clear water when the fish can see a lure.

In the winter when fish have moved inshore where the water is often mucky, a juicy bait anchored to the bottom sends a scent trail out for the fish to find. I think that the fish are slower in the colder water and so are less inclined to chase a moving lure but will scavenge and mop up easy pickings like an anchored bait.

yes I think its down to clarity of water. and the fact that the cod spawn in the winter so move close in. You will still pick fish off wrecks if water is clear, I hope to try a few with jiggers when weather allows.

a point to remember there are no rules in fishing and anything can work at any given time, the fish don't play by rules if they did we probably woundn't enjoy it so much. it's 90%luck 10% skill

            its more than water clarity

drift: no point drifting over a wreck with a knot of drift...but on anchor its ok

scent: high scent baits like cart, lug, mussel lure cod towards you. you dont need to find the fish, they find you

temperature: cod likes cold water. in summer you need to go deep to find the water below 10C...in winter the cold water reaches inshore

uptiding in theory works all season, but with warm and clearer waters in summer its not good.

exactly correct! forget all the text book crap about drift speed scent strength etc etc
certainly those things can help, but how many times has everything been right according to the text book, and not a fish in sight.

in short the fish dont play by rules whether it be game coarse or sea

                    well

fishing isjust as much luck as golf, darts or poker

looks luck to the untrained eye, but the more you practice the luckier you get
