A belated catch report form about three weeks ago. We headed off for a sneaky couple of hours after micky had finished work. The vis was pretty poor and about 500 yards from the piers we couldn't see them but felt safe enough with two plotters and aux engine fitted. Steaming to the first mark we came upon a huge amount of bird activity and decided to stop for a drift expecting mackeral. I dropped down first and nearly had the rod pulled out of my hand with a full house of coleys! Some of them were way over 2lb and great fun. Mickey had 6 at a time on three times on a 12lb class rod, it was hooped right over!
We also had mixed amongst them some mackeral, herring and when we could get to the bottom and sometimes off it some cod. A lone pollack also fell to mickeys rod. The coleys were herding herring fry into balls and just diving into them, at times the water was black with the herring.
I was bringing a fish up that was followed by a huge coley which we estimated way over 4lb. All in all it was the best session of the season so far as it was totally unexpected, the most frenetic session we have ever had off Growler, Nefin or the Cowpen Queen!
Hopefully out on friday for our first foray over the horizon if the weather is ok!!!!Fingers crossed. There was a bit of lift running tonight when I was up at Amble.
