15th April on the Upholder out of Amble skippered by Dave Builth. First trip of the year. Weather was fog to 50 yards, biting NE wind with a dampness that cut through you to the bone, a four foot swell and choppy seas in between.
Fished an ebbing tide which was tending towards a neap. The drift was not too strong. Held bottom comfortably all day with 10 oz lead and probably could have used less.
Slow to start with the fish beginning to show as we came within a couple of hours from the bottom of the tide with best coming over the slack. Fish either moved, or went off the feed as tide started to flood.
Six anglers on the boat fishing the usual variation of traces. A long trace off a boom, on the bottom, outfished the three hook, shop-bought paternoster traces. Fish seemed to like the extra movement in the tide. Usual baits used, worm, frozen mackerel, squid, prawns and mussel. I had all my cod on lug tipped with a small squid strip.
The anglers averaged 5-6 codling each, up to 4lb, with quite a few scotchies in between, and a single wrasse. Best fish of the day was a pollack of 4-5lb to me on a small leadhead, which was safely returned. The codling were a fifty-fifty mix of coloured and clean run fish, so some new fish are moving back inshore. The fish however were concentrated in small areas, so you needed to know the marks where they were.
Thanks to Dave for taking us out in marginal conditions and getting us a few fish. Never been so glad to get the car heater back on.
