A nice easy drive down to Hartlepool, with very little traffic for an early morning departure.
Famous, Wandering Star and ourselves in the Marina lock for just after 7am chomping at the bit to get at them.
A dull and overcast start to the day as we headed out with a very gentle North Easterly wind which gave the slightest of chop to the sea.
So off we went for the Fresh Mackerel to use as bait, they proved to be elusive today and we moved to 2 spots before we had enough.
There has been posts recently of very small Mackerel been caught and today I saw them with my own eyes, perfectly formed between 4 and 6 inches long.
While hunting the Mackerel, what also came along on daylights during this time were loads of fat coalfish and Horse Mackerel in numbers I've never seen before.
With the bait bucket stocked for later, off we went in search of our scaly friends.

I jigged away on my tried and trusted Sidewinder sand eel and over the day took all 8 Codling on the shad, then changing over to bait to land 5 Ling.

The best Ling tipping the scales at 19lb and a nice Cod of just under 10lb, both captured by the same angler.

The Mackerel played ball all day when bait began to run low, and they were picked up just about everywhere, with some really big fish being caught, well over 2lb.

A really nice Pollock came in later in the day weighing a respectable 9lb giving the angler a fight of a lifetime.

Big tide, little tide, I really don't think it matters that much, I just change my tactics to the conditions, and persevere, my catches go some way to prove it.
Overall another great day on a great boat and great Skipper, The fish tally for today, a very respectable 50/50 split of Cod and Ling with about 80 fish in total.
We didn't move around too much today, Dave had us on fish from the off, the weather played its part and the banter was, as usual, amusing to say the least.

5 booked trips left, the bigger fish moving in, I think there's time for a few PB to be broken yet.

    Until the next time

Nice one, you's seemed to have done well down there when others have struggled from the tyne.
Is that an okuma cortex rod you use?
Been thinking of getting the travel one for Norway.

      Hi Chris
Yes, its the Cortez 6' 6" 20/30 class, it has a really nice smooth action and bends from the butt with a decent fish on, suits me ideally as I like short rods, unfortunately they have discontinued it.
If the travel rod comes from a similar "mould" I would presume it would perform nicely in Norway.
I use my Snowbee Deep Blue Speed Jigging rod over in Norway
Again 6' 6" in length and 300gram rating, even lighter than the Cortez.

A great informative post mate, thanks for putting it up.

Never seen a bad catch report from either of Dave's boats which speaks volumes really.

Speaking of Dave's boats, his latest baby arrived last Wednesday, a 42ft procharter, she's on blocks in the boat yard behind the Marina, getting fitted out, Cracking looking boat.

Hi Mate, Fished rough ground all day, drift a little too quick for any attempts on the wrecks, Have to give praise to the Skipper, every trip this year (and I've had 14 outings with Dave) never once took less than 8 decent fish home, he certainly knows his stuff.

Aye John, Dave's spot on we fished a few times with him a couple of seasons ago but we mainly like wrecking, I don't know why its been the worst season in 5yrs for our squad.I think I will book a few with Dave for next year I'll see what the lads say.
                Cheers,Bryan.

Great report. I am seriously jealous !!

In my eyes Hartlepool grounds are the best place to fish in September and especially on big tides.

Before I had my boats, I had some cracking days on Ali Cat.

In Sunderland and Tyneside, we are not blessed with quality grounds further offshore...unfortunately

but we have hundreds of wrecks....which as you say are not great at big tides, because it swallows all the tackle.

Out of the all the trips this year I've been out with Dave, while on the boat, we have only visited 2 wrecks, and we left after a very short time, there just wasn't the fish that you would normally find hanging around, compared to latter years, the ground has definitely been the winner this year for me, up till now!
It really was a good day yesterday and no tackle lost at all (very rare)
Thanks for the kind remarks Norbert

Your reports this season have been one of the best. Excellent photos, insider knowledge etc.
Also no bullsht like stretched arms or exaggerated weights.

What amazed me most was that your reports with excellent catches came up in times when all other struggle to find fish.

Big Big well done to you and Dave

And I also agree that the wrecks were hard work this season. Eventually we found a few big ones on almost every trip, but they never jumped on board.

I also did not have a day this season were we could do no wrong...we always had dead wrecks or dead periods.

Some say, its the dirty water and algae bloom, some say its loads of seals...

You can still get the 20-30lb 6'6" travel version. Do you think it would be ok for Norway? I've used a maximums 20-60lb in the past with no problems but need a travel rod for next year. Not wanting to spend too much though, £70 max.
