Back at last after a month full of things getting in the way of fishing, including our “little-un”, Mark passing his day skipper ticket.
He took the helm this afternoon relegating me to cabin boy. Everyone knows how busy a cabin boy’s job is running around doing stuff, which is why I had no time to catch fish but Mark did.
We found the wrecks empty of fish even though not many boats were out. Mark soon landed a coddling then we hit a long barren spell. Drifting over the back of a wreck about 6 miles out, fishing a baited lure on a 6/0 hook, he pulled out, then returned an 8oz sole. The lad has some luck, while I remained fishless with even the mackerel in hiding today.
Running back in to the hard ground at Cullercoats put that right and we both found a few coddling to about 3lb. On the way in I spotted a salmon jumping, the first of the season; that would have been a welcome addition to the fish box. Mark pointed out something in the water that I thought was just a poly bag - we turned around for a look anyway, and he was right. Basking on the surface was a sunfish.
All-in-all a lovely day to be out and not spoilt by the slow fishing. Here's one of his photo's.
