Alarm set for 515am this morning, but was rudely awakened at 440am by Lynn clattering around the caravan. Couldn't sleep she said and she ribs me for getting excited!
Arrived at Royal Quays at 610am a full 1hr 20 mins before sailing!
Met Gary(spongebob) who was out early on Blue Eye2, good to meet you mate, hope you had a good day?
My friend David, came down from Scotland last night to join us for the day and we really hoped he would do well, as it's a long way to come for a day's fishing, especially driving back home after the charter. Finally 730am came and out we went with a party of army lads onboard. It was clear they were army guys, rather than navy, as this squaddie spent the day sleeping in the cabin. Poor guy, £45 lighter just to be sick for 10hrs! Remember those days Steve!?
Off we went to catch some Mackerel us usual and we bagged up fairly quickly. I kept the hokkai's on and within 10 mins the first keeper of the day came to me, in the shape of a decent Pollock.
Things then went quiet as the drift was too fast for the small wreck we were on, so we headed North, off Blyth. During the move I reckoned it was time to crack out Norman's Slinky Shads. Neither David or Lynn wanted one, sticking to baited hokkai's. More fool them thought I.
Arriving at off Blyth down went one of Norman's blue shads and up came a decent Cod. Then another two came fairly soon after that, so Mark-4, Lynn and David-Nil.
Lynn could take it no longer and asked for a shad! She doesn't like using shads, not sure how she made that assessment as she has never used one before.........women eh! Anyway sure enough, Norman's gear did the business and Lynn was finally in with a cod around 3.5lbs. Still not near my one about 5lbs though. David being a stubborn Scot still refused my offer of a "magic shad" and was determined to catch on his own gear.
I had another 2 cod and by 1pm I had six, Lynn three, David nil. Moved again and this time all the way to Newbigging, so picnic time! A quiet word with David and we persuaded him to try the shads. Thank goodness, as he ended up with four, the best being 5.5lbs, so at least he had fish to take home to show the wife.
This really had the makings of one of our best days afloat and it certainly ended up that way! Some of the other lads on the boat were doing quite well too, just not as well us Lynn and I !! After lunch, I hit on what was to be my best, and the boats of the day, a 7LB 120Z Cod. Delighted with that.
By 330pm I had 14, yes fourteen Cod and a Pollock! I know, I can't believe it either. With my dodgy back, starting to hurt, I decided the sensible thing to do was stop fishing, as we have two days of the holiday left and two weeks of summer schools, starting on Monday.
Lynn and David stuck with it, in a vain and futile attempt to usurp me from the top spot. Not today guys!
Final Tally - David 5, Lynn 11, all Cod, Me- 1 Pollock, 14 Cod!
At flipping last, so pleased and for Lynn too(sort of!). It has been a long haul this holiday, but it came good in the end.
Lynn serving her penance for losing! So two wins out of three to me. I think we should swop our names on here!
A huge thanks to Norman for saving our holiday with his "Slinky Shads." We owe you crates and crates of Stella!
Baited hokkai's - 1 Pollock, 6 Cod.
Slinky Shads - 19 Cod - Need I say more?!
Thanks to Skipper Allan for a great day's fishing!
At the van now, with beers in our hands and huge smiles on our faces. Thanks to all who helped us this last 10 days and those who just had a smile at our trials and tribulations. It's been a blast!
This fishing lark is a doddle!!
