  • Ali-Cat. Hartlepool 13.7.2014

Arrived at the marina for a 7am kick off.
Travelled through some very heavy rain from Blyth but it had stopped once I got into Hartlepool.
A very humid, wet day it turned out to be, with my waterproofs on and off many times during the day, with some real heavy rain.
With it being so still and quiet, Its the first time I've heard the rain hitting the surface a long way off before it reached the boat.

I digress, on with the fishing, Dave took us down South, and stayed close in, We picked up the Mackerel needed for bait then off to some ground.

A range of tactics were employed by the lads on board, baited daylites, flowing traces, flappers etc, but I started off with my Favourite, "The Shad"

Fishing began slowly with a few Cod coming up, but saying that, they were good fish in 4lb - 6lb range.

I took my first fish after about 45minutes about 4lb and as is my custom, it is always returned whatever the size.

Dave moved us around today to find our scaly friends and he didn't disappoint.

A variety of fish came up during the day with Cod, best had to be pushing 12lb, a beautifully marked clean fish, Ling to about 10lb some really big Whiting, a nice Haddock

and plenty of Mackerel if you wanted them.

As I said, earlier, my waterproofs certainly didn't need cleaning after the trip, very eerie at times with a flat calm sea and torrential rain.
The drift wasn't bad today even with the big tide, held the bottom with ease with 14ozs of lead.

The wind did pick up as the forecast, but didn't interfere with the fishing at all and it petered out after a very short while.
So a very enjoyable day yet again, Freezer's are now full.

A few photos of the catch
    Thanks for reading.

Strange that you had a nice allday trip and KAYOS had to come back to safe harbour...from the same port....at the same time....on the same sea ???!!!

I don't find it strange at all
        From the same port, Yes.
        At the same time, Yes.
        In the same sea, Yes
        On the same boat, No.
Cats vs monohull, no competition, plus there were many other boats around us, overall it wasn't that bad.

....and that is why I found it strange when I read KAYOS` report and heard that they had to rush in, whilst loads of others were out and caught good fish
Was there one episode of very bad gusts that has scared them?

And by the way...sorry for highjacking your lovely catch report !! I have been a few times out with Dave Lumley and always 100% had good days on his boat and lots of fun.

Very nice catch, photos and report (much better than what I report !!)

Boys, boys, Ali Cat was nowhere near us, but Famous was and he came in. No one was scared and in that swell we didn't rush in either, tried to sit it out, but not possible. Disappointing, but no one dissented when the call was made, it was the right thing to do.

Not that I feel I have to justify my decision but their was also 6 elderly people on the boat from 65 to 84 yrs who didn't have waterproofs and where soaked to the skin yes we could have stayed out but at the end of the day I have to be responsible and cater for everyone on the boat and their safety and well being is paramount to me

Well said Jim, safety must come first. There is always another day to go fishing.

                          Absolutely Jim.

However what do you mean "there was 'another' 6 elderly people on board?"
That suggests you think we are elderly too!!

                          See you next year mate.
