My first proper catch report
Saturday night I looked at the weather forcast for the morning and it looked too good to miss , unfortunately I had no fresh bait which meant a late start so we could get some from a tackle shop on Sunday morning.
Bait got , my mate and I headed down the coquet at about 8.30 am , after thursdays escapades I was very pleased to find the sea as flat as a pancake The fishing proved difficult however , with very little coming to our rods , we were at the back of the island and after maybe 3 or 4 hours all we had to show for our efforts was a single codling of about 2.5 lb. and a couple of small coalies.
The sea was so flat and I was getting so frustrated I thought I'd experiment with my plotter , my mate agreed that we should head out to a wreck showing 2 miles out and of we went.
First time we've been out there , it was so quiet , so calm and peaceful and sooooo hot We found the "wreck" a tiny mound of nothing in the middle of miles of flat bottom , drifted over it a couple of times with no success and decided to motor back.
We stopped again on the way back maybe 1.5 miles out , we hit mackerel and had a good hours fun with them on jiggers and a light spinning rod then as the tide was starting to turn we decided to give the hard ground another go behind the island.
As we set off my mate let out such a yell I thought the back of the boat had come off , "what the hell is that " he says pointing out to sea. Eventually I seen what he had about a hundred yards away , it looked like a marlin
We sat and watched as it porpoised out of the water every few minutes and got closer to us , it came within about 50 yards of the boat , I'm guessing it was some kind of whale , a pilot maybe? We could clearly hear it breathing as it surfaced and could see it was a lot bigger than a dolphin with a big floppy dorsal and grey/black patchy skin. Interesting to say the least!
Anyway , back to the fishing and we did a few drifts behind the island once more , this time with much more success ending up with 6 more cod and what I now know is a pouting ( a very clearly defined stripey one).
We went home very tired , but very happy fishers
Ray.
