  • On-A-Roll 14.06.2014 At sea report

Ok i will start with we filled the fish hold with cod and ling upto 12lb and caught of sank the boat with mackerel if we had wanted that many but this report is more about the day at sea and the wildlife.

Plan was to meet up early and head to the Graveyard again, so by 6am we had fuel up and heading out to sea, the forecast was changing by the update and not what i had hoped for so the decision was to go 19 miles out and fish a couple of wrecks and make the call at the half way point.

We got settled and landed a couple of ling and a cod along with as many mackerel as you could wish for and i knew it would not take long before i was loosing my tempter at mackerel taken my pirk or shad when trying to fish the wreck...so that to me spells the mackerel in full flow

Anyway we did them two wrecks and the sea was not very good with a building NE swell, with safety in mind i decided to not do the Graveyard today but since we that far out, move around fishing the odd wreck here and there, sometimes 4 miles apart so alot of time spent under steam.

Sea when leaving the piers once we cleared the fog

Sea 19 mile out about 1hr later, you can see the rollers starting

Then a great sight for us all, a massive pod of dolphins started chasing the boat and jumping front and back, all sizes, We kept on steaming and stopped on a wreck about 17 miles off, lines down then what we got treated to was something special.

Dolphins jumping all over, swimming inbetween our lines and coming right up against the boat and turning on the side looking at us fish away, we chucked them a mackerel and they never ate it but picked it up and chucked it in the air, i was cursing i never had a good camera able to get better pics but hope you like the below shots.

As i say with a better camera it would have been something for the photo book,

Ok the fishing well as i say yes we found them but alot of wrecks just bare of any life, we hit a couple of wrecks taken over 20 keepers in no time at all, with most of them cod with the best fish about 12lb.

We also hit a few biggish coalie.

one wrecks worth of fish, as eager Mick had already sorted the previous lot during steaming

    Nice ling into double figures.

So all in all a great time out with lots of fish once we found them and a great day watching the wildlife, on the Graveyard front it was a good call in the end as the sea really came away about 6pm having us down to 9knots, anything faster and the boat dug in

Hope the weather stays nice for you lads the next two weeks.

Shame the weather was against you Richy, I am sure there will be plenty more chances to hit the Graveyard. What an experience to have the dolphins playing around the boat like that, it turns an ordinary trip into one that you will never forget. That whale we saw on Friday and the noise it made as it blew, will stay with me forever.

Thanks again for a great trip on Friday and best of luck in Norway, I'm not jealous at all

Thats what I was saying in a earlier post Richy when you drop the speed its a long way, you made the right call, when you say she dug in I take it you mean in a following sea with the swell coming from the NE, not a very nice sensation broaching had it happen a few times.
