A slightly late start today to give the lock a chance to quieten down a bit. as we drove along the sea front we counted about 30 boats in the can area so knew it would be busy. Kevin also spotted a few dolphin running up the coast towards the river about 1/4 of a mile offshore.
on leaving the river about 10am we ran into the afore mentioned dolphins and what a show we were treated to. The end of the North pier was crowded with onlookers who probably couldn't believe their luck. there were at least a dozen dolphins with several very young pups among the group and the pod spread around the entrance to the river playing alongside every boat in the vicinity. At one point I didn't know which dolphin to watch as so many were surfacing, some only a couple of feet from the boat. There were fins flippers and tails everywhere we looked and the very small pups were surfacing with their mothers. Absolutely fantastic.

The plan today was to try long drifts while drinking large quantities of coffee and the plan worked well with a steady stream of fish in the pound and a half to three pound range with the oddo ne to 4lb. as the day went on the fishing was sparodic until the final hour when we came into the can. We finished off with a mad hour until the bait ran out with a fish a drop with some being taken on the drop.
We finished off keeping the five best fish but must have returned around forty or fifty codling and plenty of scotchies . a great days fishing and thanks again Kev for the crack and the coffee.

Nice write-up Steve and the pics came out well. We drifted more than 3 miles today, starting south of Cullercoats and ending north of St Mary’s, that has to be a record. Pouring out the coffee always does the trick to bring the fish on just when you least need it. Cheers for the help, the crack and showing me how to catch fish in the last hour.

Here’s some of my pics from today.

A dolphin comes for a closer look.

              Here's what we were after,
