  • Granddaughters first boat trip. 24/04/14.

After much pestering from my 16 year old granddaughter Ashleigh to take her boat fishing, I booked a couple of places aboard Upholder out of Amble for today and we had a most enjoyable trip. The day started off with a light drizzle, but shortly after boarding the boat the skies began to clear and the sun was soon beating down on us. The sea was quite placid with just a long, lazy swell and although some of the waves were, at times quite large, it wasn`t too unpleasant. We headed off to the hard ground and, using baited hokkais we started fishing. A couple of small codling come aboard, unfortunately not to me or Ashleigh, and it looked like it was going to be a good day out. After showing Ashleigh the basics of rough ground fishing she soon gained the confidence to carry on without further instruction from me. I was the first one of us to connect with a fish and soon reeled in a small codling, which went back to grow bigger for next time. Then Ashleigh had a good hard knock and she pulled up a nice fish of around 3lb, this was soon followed by another slightly smaller one and then it went a bit quiet. As the morning progressed the swell started to pick up and Ashleigh started to feel a bit seasick, so she stopped fishing for a while. I carried on and was soon rewarded with another codling, again around the 3lb mark. Eventually Ashleigh felt well enough to carry on and managed to get one more codling, which, being a bit smaller, was also returned to grow bigger. Well, that was it for the pair of us, 3 fish each, I kept 1 and Ashleigh took 2 home for tomorrows dinner. All in all it was a most enjoyable day out and Ashleigh is determined to go again, but only if the sea isn`t quite so lumpy.

Good day out by the sounds of it, apart from the seasick moments, but a great result in the end.

Good for her wanting to try a fishing trip and getting stuck in after feeling sea sick. Tell her well done.
