Breaking ourselves in slowly for the season it was a late 8.00am Start at the Marina, this fit in well with the tide hitting full low at 8.45 am so we decided to fish it up ..... well, weather dependant
Now of late I notice that the weather forcasts are becoming uncannily correct, at least the three day or so forcast and this was to be no different. Watching as I'm sure yous all have of recent we have had a nice soft westerly, warm air and flat seas since about Monday but with a sharp wind rise and tempeature drop forcast for Saturday and Sunday (no change there then) ........... guess what !.. they got it spot on after a nice warm day on Friday we went out today into what could only be called a south westerly hoolie ..... . Never mind, as we kept telling ourselves, "at least if you've been out in this then good times will feel all the better !" ......
So there we were meeting up at 8.00am in a stiff breeze in the marina carpark to be overshadowed by this tied up at the wharf ...........
Now to me its just another naval vessel one of many that come and go to this part of the world quite often, but no, to Tony this was times taken aback as he then told me he served active time on that very vessel .... I'm sure Tone will explain in more detail ....
Anyway back to the catch report, off we went to the spring run ground of St Marys which I thought our probable best chance of a catch at this time of year ... not so unfortunately, with lines streaming 45 degrees in the heavy drift it was difficult to hold bottom and not a bite to be seen.
"Not the best state of tide" we tried to tell ourselves
So, after spending endless drifts we decided to try a little further afield and sped off to the 3 mile wrecks (which were actually 4.5 miles away but thats another story ).
Eventually in the increasing wind, bumpy seas and cold conditions Tony was in to the first fish of the day, a small codling (which was destined to be returned no matter what the size as we decided early on that todays catch would all go back as it was really just a scouting mission)
Soon after that I too was in to my first codling of the season again returned for the good of its health.
We moved around a bunch of wrecks in this area and the only other catch was a "very" small bootlace ling, but at least it kinda was a catch this too obviously was returned.
Conditions were deteriorating so we decided to come back inshore and met up with bert keith and Jim on "Shady H" who I believe had faced the same conditions and slow catch rate south of the tyne, anyway it was time for the traditional liquid breakfast to be handed over even though it was more like "Brunch" since it was now around 12.00 midday (a big thanks to bert for some special traces hes made up for us and swapped over "Brunch")
Time moving on we decided to call it a day, ....... a few weeks ago we cleaned Slinky Kate ready for use, last week we "seen" a fish caught by Arthur, this week we both touched fish caught by ourselves .... thats it then next week we get to practice filleting and "Taste" a fish
A few pics of the day ..... (no sunrise, we were too late )
Tonys First Codling ....
My First Codling ...
And the baby Ling ....
The "Brunch Meeting" with team "Shady H"
All in all a great day out ready now to start the season in earnest .......
Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoyed,
cheers
