  • Slinky Kate Catch Report Sat 12th April 2014

Breaking ourselves in slowly for the season it was a late 8.00am Start at the Marina, this fit in well with the tide hitting full low at 8.45 am so we decided to fish it up ..... well, weather dependant

Now of late I notice that the weather forcasts are becoming uncannily correct, at least the three day or so forcast and this was to be no different. Watching as I'm sure yous all have of recent we have had a nice soft westerly, warm air and flat seas since about Monday but with a sharp wind rise and tempeature drop forcast for Saturday and Sunday (no change there then) ........... guess what !.. they got it spot on after a nice warm day on Friday we went out today into what could only be called a south westerly hoolie ..... . Never mind, as we kept telling ourselves, "at least if you've been out in this then good times will feel all the better !" ......

So there we were meeting up at 8.00am in a stiff breeze in the marina carpark to be overshadowed by this tied up at the wharf ...........

Now to me its just another naval vessel one of many that come and go to this part of the world quite often, but no, to Tony this was times taken aback as he then told me he served active time on that very vessel .... I'm sure Tone will explain in more detail ....

Anyway back to the catch report, off we went to the spring run ground of St Marys which I thought our probable best chance of a catch at this time of year ... not so unfortunately, with lines streaming 45 degrees in the heavy drift it was difficult to hold bottom and not a bite to be seen.
"Not the best state of tide" we tried to tell ourselves

So, after spending endless drifts we decided to try a little further afield and sped off to the 3 mile wrecks (which were actually 4.5 miles away but thats another story ).
Eventually in the increasing wind, bumpy seas and cold conditions Tony was in to the first fish of the day, a small codling (which was destined to be returned no matter what the size as we decided early on that todays catch would all go back as it was really just a scouting mission)

Soon after that I too was in to my first codling of the season again returned for the good of its health.

We moved around a bunch of wrecks in this area and the only other catch was a "very" small bootlace ling, but at least it kinda was a catch this too obviously was returned.

Conditions were deteriorating so we decided to come back inshore and met up with bert keith and Jim on "Shady H" who I believe had faced the same conditions and slow catch rate south of the tyne, anyway it was time for the traditional liquid breakfast to be handed over even though it was more like "Brunch" since it was now around 12.00 midday (a big thanks to bert for some special traces hes made up for us and swapped over "Brunch")

Time moving on we decided to call it a day, ....... a few weeks ago we cleaned Slinky Kate ready for use, last week we "seen" a fish caught by Arthur, this week we both touched fish caught by ourselves .... thats it then next week we get to practice filleting and "Taste" a fish

A few pics of the day ..... (no sunrise, we were too late )

    Tonys First Codling ....

    My First Codling ...

    And the baby Ling ....

The "Brunch Meeting" with team "Shady H"

All in all a great day out ready now to start the season in earnest .......

Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoyed,

    cheers

Excellent report as usual Norman, and so it begins..... Poor conditions, but pleased you both got to touch-up a fish and Tony christened his new rod-n-reel. It'll be up and at-em from now on. Great stuff.

Aye Norman, it was hard work trying to winkle a few out today, but we managed 4 keepers and a really good dab off the flattie beds.
Nice to see you's out again, and thank for Brunch . we also saw a large pod of Dolphins off the north pier, having a good old splash about, so that made the day all the more special.
            Thanks Bert and Keith.

Spent 6 weeks in the Med on the Rotterdam taking part in NATO exercises...Dutch amphibious ship. We took three Sea King Mk4s on board which acted as the troop carriers for the cloggy marines...great trip! We lost a lad in Valencia, although he did turn up again 2 days later (the ship had moved 350 miles by that point however )

Then there was the Swedish bar in Porto...

...oh and in between all that we did work

Cheers for today Norm - quite like this easing in gently lark
                  Ooh a new vid!

Is the new team Slinky signature that the crew have to copy the skipper with a beard?

Great to see you out Norman and good to see a few fish coming aboard, I picked up my nice green boat today and delivered it for antifouling and engine service so should be out soon myself

Great report Norman, great to see you lads out there again, thanks very much for the brunch. We must invest in a bottle opener, took me longer to open mine with the bait covered scissors than it did to drink it

Jim forget to mention who put the boat over the wreck for 3 of the 4 keepers, he's a modest old sole.
                            Cheers, Keith.
