As it looked as though the winter weather will start to close in, Oli decided to take a day off work to enjoy what will probably be the last of the settled days this year and joined me for what turned out to be another lovely day out on the boat. Others clearly had the same impression as there was a veritable armada of boats out at sea. A couple went north, and at least one went wrecking, but most found fish around the headlands and banks close to Amble. Several of us carried on down to Cresswell and were not disappointed.
There were plenty of cod present, buit we found the period around slackwater, and the first hour of the ebb to be less productive, and it didn't help that we picked up a curious seal that seemed to follow us around all day, coming up close to the boat on a number of occasions. When this happened, the fishing just ended abruptly. Oli and I had close to 40 codling each over the 5 hour session. We kept 4 of the bigger fish which we measured as between 53 and 55cm, but there were plenty of 2-2.5lbers among the haul, and just 2 were under a pound. One of the keepers had what appeared to be a 20cm whiting in its stomach. The best pollock was only around 4lb, but we didn't go over the better pollock marks. We found fewer coalies present, but there were some better specimens when we did connect. A bonus was the 4 wrasse that we pick up, as usually they would have disappeared by now. Water clarity was amazing for mid-November at around 15 feet, while water temp was high at around 11C. It's just a pity there is so little daylight. I've not tried night fishing, but with so many pot markers around Amble I would be very wary of giving it a go.
