Oli took a day off work and joined me on a trip out of Amble. With the weekend weather looking unfavourable, it's probably the last chance we'll get for a while. We headed south for a change, starting off at Hauxley and dropping in on northern hills and Bondicar. It was a small tide and unfortunately it meant little movement, even in the tidal streams. At this point, a pod of about 6 dolphins joined us, doing acrobatics. A great spectacle.
Fishing was slow, but I did find some launce that we were able to use as bait later. There were also some lovely coloured kelpies, but biggest was only about 3lb, as well as the usual coalies, some small pollock and some tiny codling. At that point we headed out to some wrecks that we don't normally fish, but even here, the lack of tide was a handicap. It's not often you sit motionless on a wreck, wishing the drift to speed up. We picked up a few codling to 4lb, and a smal ling. Coalies were out in force on 1 wreck, but there were none at all on others. Same for mackerel. We only had a couple all day. When the pout put in an appearance, we knew that there wasn't much doing, so thought about a move inshore to the reefs to see if the ebb had caused some more movement. Sadly not, but the highlight of the day then occurred - a minke whale came right up to the boat, and swam under us, circled us and stayed for quite a while.
Overall, a satisfying day. The seas were calm, the wildlife performed and we even had a few fish.
