Wrecking off Newbiggin 8/9/19

Just a quick report on yesterday's wrecking session with Oli. Because of the small tides, we headed south from Amble to see what we could get off the wrecks. We stopped at a couple about 3 miles off, and managed several pollock to 4lb, but no cod. We headed further out to some of the larger wrecks, and again, were rather disappointed. The biggest codling was about 5lb, but they were hard to get, and bites were dainty, not aggressive. Drift speed was just 0.1-0.2 knots, which helps explain it, but that soon picked up to 1 knot when the winds veered south-east. So too did the waves, and by 4pm we'd had enough of being bounced around and headed back to Amble.

Between us, we landed just over a dozen codling, all between 2-5lb, a handful of pollock and another half-dozen coalies, all of which went back. And plenty of big mackerel. They were a real pest, going for every lure, and even baited hooks. Oli took the most fish, using a large mackerel bait which he was hoping would tempt a ling. Overall, it was a bit of an anti-climax. We couldn't even say the wrecks had been fished out before we got there as there were no other boats in sight all day.

Aye, it always feels good to be out on the water, and it was sunny and warm enough for most of the day. We knew that the tides were not great and the previous couple of days there had been big swells so the water would not be as clear as we'd have liked, but that's fishing for you. There's always another day.
