  • A bit of this and that on Slinky Kate 15/09/07

It all started with a PM late yesterday afternoon from Norman....

"the sea looks flat as anything - fancy going out?"

It was unfortunately a bit too late for Slinky regular Steve, who is putting in the long hours this weekend you were missed mate

Cruised up the Tyne just after 0700...the sky was clear and there was only a slight breeze.

Things soon started to look ominous when Norman said "It looks a bit choppy beyond the piers" LOL we hadn't even left the Tyne and already it looked like another bumpy day

The sea swell was HUGE...at least 10/12 ft and when we were in the trough you couldn't see the horizon ....but as severe as that may sound it wasn't really "rough"...

As a result of this ominous sea state it was decided to stay inshore...so we fished for a bit here and fished for a bit there......Zip, Nil, Nada, Zilch

Conditions improved slightly so we went to a close in wreck - where within minutes Norman and I were simultaneously into a couple of pan sized Codling...that felt better

Ventured down the coast as far as Mardsen...

Caught nothing here either so we moved on fairly sharpish - onto another few wrecks...

Deeper water = better fishing...at least now we seemed to be getting knocks...caught several scrapping coalies and loads and loads of large Whiting...

Then Norman finally got a decent knock...

which resulted in this nice 4lb+ Cod

I decided to give big baits a go and fished a mackerel flapper....it didn't have quite the desired effect LOL ...

As you can see it got chewed to death by scotchie robbing barstewards....which I'm pleased to report only one was landed today!!!

No Ling today - not even the small ones which seemed to plague all boats in the Comp' last week...fair few macky caught though...I think about 29 or so

Strange day weather wise and also sea wise...it threatened to be bumpy then calmed down, the sun came out and then it also rained

Cheers again Norman - had an excellent morning out
    Ooh a new vid!

Glad you enjoyed your day guys. It must be great to have your own boat and just go where you want and when you want and not have to worry about getting a spot on board a charter boat and getting your lines caught up with 11 other anglers.

                        Mick.

If i still lived in Hartlepool i would buy a boat 100%. Even if i just sat in it 300 yards off the end of the heugh.

                        Some good deals on e-bay.
Personal best, 12.5lb Tope Scotland. 22/05/2012.

Well done on sticking it out.

                          Tony,
A hint for yah if you want to try flappers but it keeps getting hit by smaller fish. We kept suffering this with doggies hammering baits intended for tope.

The answer is to cut straight through the mackrel just behind the dorsal fin and not take out the backbone. This presents smaller fish with a large cross section they cant get in their mouth but poses no problem to tope or big ling and cod.

Another advantage is the mackrel takes longer to wash out retaining its juices longer.

                          Cheers
                          Dave
